IL/Chicago service centers
« on: January 07, 2024, 08:17:33 AM »
I had an idea to start listing some shops in Illinois Chicagoland that can help out with our sohcs, I'll start with Generation MX in Plainfield, they relaced my rear wheel and did a great job.

ACME in Chicago also did my tires a while ago but last I called they don't work on vintage Honda's but that could've changed.

One more is MCC in Villa Park they fixed a tuning issue and timed my ignition and did excellent work.

MCC is one of the few remaining shops around here that still bore/hone small bore cylinders… down to 2” at least. About $100/ hole though.
CB750K5 - Slowly putting back together.
GS1100LT - Nicely upgraded over the years.
CB400F - Production lightweight race bike.
Cl175k7 - Gp200 race bike.

Yeow! It's only $35-$40 per hole here.

You want to try uk, a lot of places charge £300 plus to do a four pot.
I wenr and bought my own boring bar but can only do 500 four and upwards
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

What boring bar did you get? I'm thinking about that, too.

Van norman 944s Mark. That will go down to 500 and spares are available from India, the table to bolt to is most difficult to get and can cost as much as the bar

The new school Rottler stuff I see on YouTube is super nice. It looks like their "medium" stone holder would work with .200 or .312 stones.

What home do you plan on using..?

An old Bridgeport will do a good job too…one should retain the top of the cylinder just to make sure…..and you know why..🤫

I don’t think the 5.000” quill travel will allow you to do it the easy way..I remember having to crank it…

Honed to final fit on a Sunnen horizontal. It was super accurate and stones down to 600…pretty much a mirror if you wanted it that way.. I think the CB chrome rings where finished at 200 and plateaued by 400…

Well rather than buy one my thoughts were to find somebody who has one already and talk them into setting up to do them ;-). The quality of the job seems to be top notch.

I bought a 4 stone hone from India off of ebay. It's so old that the storage package was pretty much crumbled. It seems to work though, I felt like I should take my shoes off and hone it on a dirt floor though.
