I need a very good battery for my 550F
« on: January 18, 2024, 04:40:45 PM »
It was suggested that I might pose a question here along with the one I originally posted  on this site.  My '76 Honda 550F runs a total loss system as it was intended to be a vintage race bike when I bought it from the PO.  It's a very cool setup and I didn't want to change it.  The engine spins up so much quicker and has a higher top speed.  The problem I have is finding a battery that can be charged over and over again.  What do people who run total-loss use as a battery that can take that?  Thanks in advance.

I use Lithium batteries on my salt-flats racer. Because they take longer to charge I have two units. Measure your availble space and get the highest capacity that is sure to fit. May latest choice is promoted as a 'race' battery on ebay............about $100.

Thanks Old Scrambler.  What do you use to charge your lithium batteries?  Can they be put on a trickle charger?

Wait a minute guys. The intended use is for a running time of 6 hours on the street, not a few passes down the drag-strip or a run down the salt flats. ;)
Nvr2old, lithium batteries tend to die all at once, as in it can have 12v under load, and then 30 seconds later it only has 8v, and still dropping. If the voltage gets too low, the ignition system can't make enough spark to keep the engine running. I like LiFe batteries for their light weight and high short term starting currents, but lithium batteries in general do not tolerate deep discharge cycles.
A lead acid battery's voltage declines more slowly, and may be more tolerant of discharge/charge cycles. The AGM Steve posted on your other thread might be a good choice, given the price; you could buy 2 of them for less than 1 lithium. ;D
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

That's good info, scottly.  I'll contact the Scorpion people and see what they say.  Thanks, guys.
