Stupid F2 Comcast front wheel (solved, probably)
« on: January 22, 2024, 05:03:18 AM »
Hello all,

I'm replacing the bearings in my Comstars. Currently the rolling resistance on the wheels is like the bearings are lubricated with cake batter. That can't be good.

I am however perplexed and infuriated with the front wheel - I have removed the bearing retainer on the right side, but now I have an axle sticking into a bearing with no way to get purchase on the bearing. On the other side, the speedo drive spins and spins but I can't see a way to remove it. My assumption is that the axle needs to come out first but I decided I would rather ask you folks for advice before I start hammering on things.

What are the correct steps to disassemble the bearing assembly in a 1977 F2 Comcast front wheel.

You need to remove #13 (it's a nut) from #2 (axle)

You need to remove #13 (it's a nut) from #2 (axle)

I usually use an appropriately sized drift pin or punch in the hole at the opposite end of the axle (#2) while removing nut #13.

I agree, you need to use something that won't bend.

So I need to remove the nut on the right side of the wheel opposite the speedo drive. I'm not sure what method you're talking about - a punch in the whole at the opposite end?

Yes, the axle end has a hole instead of a hex, the nut is on the other end like shown in the picture. I have had to heat the nut before but try with the biggest Phillips screwdriver that you can get in there and a big crescent wrench on the other end.
Take note of the direction of the nut and the order of the spacers.

So the screwdriver will immobilize the axle while I twist the nut?

Thanks for the assistance.

Finally, should I be trying to buy OEM Honda pads? Kevlar or sintered metal?

When the axle is out you use a drift to push the internal spacer sideways and knock the bearing out by using the drift on the inner race, once one bearing and spacer is out you can knock the other one out.

Questions come up, but once you've done a thing the answer stays with you. Rinse and repeat a few times and you're in the know. It just takes time and motivation.
