jets... where to buy aftermarket ones
« on: January 22, 2024, 03:16:06 AM »
running a baffled but more open exhaust and no airbox. either my antipod setup or a breadbox. So need I ned to go up on my idle jet sizing but would like to hear from you guys on where to find good jets. P.S. I know stock airbox is the way to go but its not in my plans. Eventually I'll list my box of airbox parts when I get around to moving bc ill find them again. i think its 3 setups mostly complete but that would be looked for until at least may.

So good companies to get jets from and GO!
PS its for my 73 500 with a 74 550 on it running the 73 carbs. last i had it out it ran good on pods but def had a hangup or 2 as they all do running pods

In my experience, using genuine main jets is less critical than genuine pilot jets…. Especially if you’re buying them in 3 or 4 sizes…. It starts to add up.  If you’re just going up or down one size might as well go genuine.

I would most definitely recommend jetsrus for OEM or OEM equivalent jets.

I was rejetting some PD42B carbs off a 78F and while jetsrus didn't have OEM pilot jets they had "OEM equivalent" and I found that going up 2 sizes was perfect for pod filters and open 4:1. They did stock OEM jets for the mains, and I was able to easily dial it in with them.

In my experiences it's not just about the "accuracy" of the ID of each jet *size*, it's about the potential margin of error for jets of the same size. You don't want #1 having a marginally larger diameter than #2 if you can avoid it

Note:
I contacted Mike at jetsrus about jets for a 1976 CB550K with carbs=KEIHIN 087A

They did not have a cross reference for these carbs and no parts.

Probably doesn't apply to this thread though, just thought I would pass the info along.

I recently had a poor experience with Keyster parts. In particular, the needle was a narrower diameter compared to the needles I removed. I was unable to get rid of a rich open throttle, until I went back to my old ones.

Pattern needles and needle jets are a biy of a problem but a mainjet is simply a piece of brass with a hole in it so pattern is ok as long as fitted in sets

One size different in an aftermarket jet might flow like multiple sizes different in any direction.

I have bought from jetsrus.com plenty and satisfied with their sizes being a choice of OEM and good aftermarket.
I have navigated their site and have the most success in matching jets when I look at all the 'jets' pages(they do have a good image/description to match-up to what you have);they have most configurations and sizes needed.

I'll check them out. As I really only need 1 or 2 sizes up on the pilots. I'll be running bread box with factory rubbers or the antipod setup designed by a forum member. (still need to reach out to ITG about replacement foam)

It is a hole that has a needle inserted into it though...and there is a counterbore that determines what part of the needle is working. If they are consistent, 4 alike and a 105 actually gives us a richer mix than a 100 then I see them as useful...better than nothing for sure.

I noticed it poking out with the jet holder removed but had not investigated how close to the needle it ends up.

Even with genuine jets! Measure them!

I have a buddy who owns a shop and he had to start measuring ALL genuine jets because he was having too many cases of them being off.

He deals in high power 2 strokes where a little lean can make for some big problems but even genuine ones come from so many different places, measure them.

One problem with that is that due to the difficult to predict nature of fluid dynamics, two holes (i.e. jets) may not "flow" the same amount of fluid.  This is why Mikuni jet numbers don't necessarily corelate wiith Keihin even though they can sometimes physically inter change.  Mikuni jets are numbered based off the results of a flow test, so sure, hole size is gonna be the main attribute but not entirely.
If it works good, it looks good...

When I was a kid my dad worked at Tillotson Carburator in Toledo, OH. as a toolmaker He said that one could take a carburetor jet and twirl a #2 pencil lightly in the metering orifice, clean it, and flow test it again and see a change in the flow just from the pencil tip being rotated against the orifice.

He also said "carburetor" is a French word that translates to "Don't F**k with it" LOL.

I always wondered if, on opening the throttle even an eeny teeny little bit, the jet needles rise nonetheless rightaway.
