wow

Makes me wonder what a mint, unrestored, 100% complete original '75 550F would bring.

I was very happy to see the sale price.
The market has been in a rut lately.

That's a really nice bike -- but $13k? Banged up exhaust and dings on the tank? 15k miles? Looks like there are some non-original parts, but not sure. The right hand side handlebar switch -- didn't 1975 bikes have an off -lo -hi switch for the headlight? (mine did, IIRC, although maybe some did, some didn't as I think the law was probably written after some were produced). Discoloration on the header. 4 or 5 grand maybe, but I guess it's worth whatever someone will pay for it.

yeah.
the grips aren't correct, The levers aren't. The left switch looks correct as my '75 550F also does not have an "off" mode. Plus, the lettering color on the vintage bikes are more orange tinted than an absolute red. So the right switch might be oem but not nos, probably aftermarket.
tool kit not complete.

Looks like another successful bit of money laundering on BAT. This one was a classic https://www.guyswithrides.com/2023/03/17/bat-bidding-conspiracy/

All that is needed to bring up the bid is 2 bidders with great memories, big egos and deep pockets.
I bought my Flake Orange 75 CB550 on BAT last year. I was willing to Pay whatever because i was the guy above.luckily there was not a second bidder so i payed a reasonable price. I went into the last minutes of the auction saying i am going to buy this bike today.

That guy’s a flipper. He sells quite a few bikes.  Apparently he scored on that one.
CB750K5 - Slowly putting back together.
GS1100LT - Nicely upgraded over the years.
CB400F - Production lightweight race bike.
Cl175k7 - Gp200 race bike.

Wow what a sale. I actually talked about BAT about putting mine up last spring but got cold feet. Every time I ride it I want to keep it. Mine is a lot nicer than this one. I wonder what it would go for. I expected 9-10k. But I guess it could be more now.

The adage that restoring an old SOHC is generally a losing proposition because you put more into it that you could get out of it by selling is out the window with this one. $13k is easily enough to restore a 400F (or clean up an original) and pocket some profit.

Funny I have been reading Peter Egan's book Leaning 3 the last few weeks amongst my other readings.  Good winter time reading when the bikes are all parked with battery tenders.  Anyhow he so loved his 400F and made me wonder if it would be something to look at to add down the road.  Last week I saw that sale and thought, maybe I don't need one.

They're great bikes and that BAT sale is an aberration for sure -- much more reasonable examples are surely out there.

Well, there's still plenty of them out there, many complete abominations, but they're out there. I've owned many bikes (British, Italian, American) including several 400f's over the last 45 yrs, in various incarnations, and most recently a '76 550f and between the 400's and the 500/550's these are by far the easiest bikes to repair/restore and modify and resell. Do the maintenance, change the oil and you can ride 'em day in and day out with nary a problem. These bikes are still plentiful, there's still a great aftermarket and for the most part it's still an affordable aftermarket. That BaT sale is an aberration, buy one, bring it back to life, ride for a year or more and then sell it. It'll return its investment and maybe a smidge less, maybe a skoch more what else could one ask for.
I put up an ad for a bike last fall and it had the 400f in the background, got more inquiries on the 400f. Everyone wanted to know what I'd take for it, I told 'em, "$5500", complete silence. So yeah, an aberration.

That's a remarkable price for an ordinary 400F
