Topic: 400/4 Torque Settings list

Hi,

I am rebuilding the engine on my 1975 400/4 and am having trouble to find a complete list of torques settings. Does such a thing exist? I have a partial list in the workshop manual and came across this which give a couple more settings than are in the workshop manual: https://www.manualslib.com/manual/1201789/Honda-Cb350f-Cb400f.html?page=106#manual
However, neither cover very much. I also checked Haynes against the workshop manual for the settings for the con-rod bolts and they show different values (Haynes doesn't make it clear if the settings are for the 400 or 550). I came across a SOHC post for a CB 750 which included the standard settings per different size bolt (to use when a specific setting for a part is not given), which would also be great to have for the 400.

I agree, handy list in one section of the manual would be really convenient. I have it in my old Norton's workshop manual and it now falls open at that page!

Also, I can't think why the 750's generic torque settings by bolt size wouldn't be fine for 400s, unless you have different bolt sizes on the 400s?

400 uses mainly 6 & 8 mm bolts in the engine. I haven't looked into what a 750 uses. Still, I would prefer to know what the settings should be for the 400.

If it isnt quoted in the Honda manual it is classed as a "generic" torque for that sized bolt as in the 750 manual.
From memory the only fastenings requiring torquing are
Conrods
Large crankcase bolts(mains)
Cylinder head

All the torque setting are in Haynes manual for the complete bike. If there isn't a torque setting mentioned, it doesn't need torquing to a specific spec. Con rod nuts are 14.5-15.9 ftlb for 400/550K and 550F

In the online workshop manual (https://www.manualslib.com/manual/1201789/Honda-Cb350f-Cb400f.html?page=106#manual) it has different settings for the con-rods (14.5-15.2 ftlb). When I saw this I assumed the Haynes manual referred to the 550. I this case the difference is small so no big deal.

Yes, you are correct but as you also say, the torque values are so close as to make no difference at all.
Here's the list of all the torque values you need for the 400/4, but I guess you've already seen this.

There isn't a longer list this is it. If you look at 500/550/750 the torque list is just as short. Even when re assembling the complete bike, the torque wrench is rarely used. 99% of fixings aren't torqued.
