Well, now that I am licensed, my car is insured, and registered, we are ready to start in earnest to get Rita ready for the makeover she so richly deserves.

These pics are after removing all of the initial items, all except for the engine stuff, which Scondon and I'll start as soon as we have all the parts we need to give Rita's Mill a great rebuild.

chuck the ball bearings - looks like the race is cactus anyway - new tapered bearings

Yeah, I just gotta figure out what bearings to get and how to get them installed. I will be relying heavily on Scondon for his experience working on these, as well as eveeryone here.

I have the part number of the "All Balls" tapered bearing kit I used in one of my CB750's. I can get it to you tomorrow, let me know.

Oh, goodness Bill, you are gonna kill me. I haven't said anything but sooner or later it is gonna come out so here goes. Over the last month or so, at various times my ankle has given out on me and my right arm is my stronger arm, and thus I try to catch myself with it. Well, thats all well and good, but in those four weeks, I have dislocated my shoulder six times. Now my Orthopaedic Surgeon is trying to schedule another MRI to see how bad the shoulder is. Not to mention the ankle isn't gaining in strength, but it looks like summer before I'll know how well it might or might not be in the long run.

All Balls Racing #22-1011 is the tapered bearing kit to replace balls. This will only work if your new frontend has a Honda size stem bolt.

Ah-ha, I think we found the rub. The front end I just took of is a narrowglide, and that looks like a real beefy stem on there.

You're right about that polish job, it IS fine looking. And I know that Rita is going to be fine. Now, what I don't know is, are you going to be fine? You gotta get healed up there Jeff. You have to be in shape to give Rita a grand ride for her first outing, don't ya think? You take care Jeff, I'll catch you later on.

Does Rita need front brakes?

Or, does the extra front end length cushion the sudden stop?

if its a an older narrow glide setup,it should have a 7/8 neck in it.

I am getting a new wide glide front end for Rita and will be using a single 11.5 inch disc set up front to aid in preventing those sudden stops,

Well DD, it is an older narrow, but I measured the stem and it came to an even one inch. Don't know where to go from here besides starting to look into where to get new bearings and races for the neck. And where to have the new races installed in the neck if Scondon and I can't do it ourselves.

Wuts up Jeff? I'll bet one of the chopper sites could help you get fixed up for your steering bearings. Cycle X or Cycle -re-cycle. I'm getting ready to do mine now but I'm runnin stock. You will need to give them dimensions for sure but they can most likely hook you up. I wish I lived closer to you guys. Lots of projects goin on over there in Oakland. Hope to hook up with you guys in a few months.We all got to meet last summer but not ride. Take care and get your bike together!!!!!

Part of my problem is that I have no idea on how to go about removing the races that are in there. So first step is get the old ones out, then measure and obtain new sets. Any advice, I'm all ears!

Well, got that figured out. I was searching for "neck Bearing Removal" when I should have just put bearing removal. Anyway, bunches of ideas to remove the races. Will try soon, and report back.

Take a drift punch and give them a tap on each side of the race, back and forth (too many hits on one side and the bearing will cock sideways). This will gradually work the bearing out of the bore.

Yep.....exactly like Jonesy says it. Not a big deal to change the bearings out except.........If you are going to a different set-up. If you are putting in non stock parts......you gotta do your homework first!!!!! Make all measurements carefully.......Anticipate changes from stock set-up......is the front end going to steer the same,fit the same ,etc................
