Getting there slowly but surely...



Carb bodies all ultrasonic'd....currently cleaning all the small pieces bit by bit.  Got my cycleorings.com kit and intake manifold o-rings. 

Hope to have the carbs back together and the Head re-torqued according to Eric's (750Cafe) recommendation next weekend. 

The wife and I were drinking beers last night and staring at the bike and decided that this was going to be the bike that we keep almost 100% stock.   Will probably do the black and blue stock paint job if I can find a decal set...

But I really want to trim the stock seat down a bit.  or I'd like to have one of the giuliari style seats

If you didn't already get them, replace the stock intake mounting bolts with 6 X 20 allen head bolts and flat washers.
The holes are already threaded deeper than the stock 16mm length and it adds a touch of better grip without pulling out the threads.

Hey Eric, 

Buttoning up my carbs soon and wanted to run the settings by you before finishing.  The jets are stock except it looks like I have 180 Pilot Air Jets as opposed to the 160 that I see documented. 

I've got a stock airbox and I'm putting a new Uni Filter element in it.  Stock 4-2 Exhaust.

Anything you see I should look to change with my setup. 

Main Jet     115
Starter Jet  45
Pilot Air Jet  180
Pilot Screw  1.5 Turns to Start

Haven't checked the needle clip position yet, but Will before finishing everything.

You may want to try 117.5 or probably 120 main jets. The fuel mixture screws (in front of the carbs by the intake manifolds) should start with about 2.5 turns out.
I never suggest going to a larger pilot jet but with the 180 air jet, you may have to. Try adjusting the fuel mixture screws out more BEFORE doing that.
The jet needles do not have clip positions on those carbs but they CAN be adjusted. Try my suggestions first. I have plenty of shims to adjust those needles if needed.

Thanks for the feedback Eric.  I'll leave everything set for now then (except the pilots i'll start out at 2.5 turns).
Still waiting on the carb kit I need to show up and then I can button up the carbs completely.

Have to travel overseas for work a week from now, so probably wont get everything re-mounted till after I get back.  But at this point I just need to:

- Finish Carbs and Replace Throttle Cable
- Paint Airbox and Battery Box
- De-grease Engine
- Check valve clearances
- Re-Torque head
- Change Oil/Filter
- Re-Wrap the harness and re-install all electrics

Then should be able to start the bike and ride around to do a real shake down on things and find out where it stands.  At this point I'll have about $300 invested into the bike....so fingers crossed all works and I can feel even better about the deal  

After this I need to

- Strip the horrible purple paint job
- find a replacement complete seat
- Install Euro Type handle bars, new headlight ears, front blinkers.

Much time has past...and this GS1000g got passed around between a few of my friends, but no work was ever really completed.   Its now back in my possession and for the moment the plan is to build and sell it.

- Racetech cartridge emulators installed in forks
- Renthal Handlebars (I think)
- Ditched the gauge cluster and put a small acewell gauge
- Wired in newer universal Domino Handlebar controls
- Other tidbits I cant remember

I got it all started up and running the other day, but decided some nice frame paint and overall cleanup would help it sell.  The shafty GS1000s dont seem to bring a lot of $$ in stock form, so I think the mild cafe look will likely help.

Everything is super greasy and dirty...the plan at the moment is to just degrease and scuff up the frame and bracketry and shoot it with Rustoleum Semi-Gloss Black Enamel.  At least thats the plan at the moment.

I may try and rig up a mount and use this windshield as it looks surprisingly good on there.  If anyone recognizes the shield and can point me towards a mount that works would save me some time
