Honda spokes
« on: March 17, 2007, 11:29:06 AM »
What were the spokes made of ?  '76 CB550F    stainless ?   the only frickin' magnet around here I have is a silly fridge magnet....
Can't really tell if its magnetic or not.    I just took apart my wheel / hub and after soaking the spokes & nipples overnight in some
carb cleaner, they cleaned up much better than anticipated.  Thinking about giving the spokes a quick hit on my new buffer that
should be here any day now.   Anybody know what they are made of?
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

I read somewhere they were mild steel with either a zinc or cad plating.

They are plated steel, go easy on the buffer or you could hit bare metal and rust would soon follow.

The spokes are more than likely zinc plated and if you buff them the zinc will rub off quite easily. Rust will follow.

The guys I knew when I was younger used to polish their spokes with chrome/metal cleaner and the result after a few years was not good. I suggest Spectro XL-1 followed by warm soap and water and a rinse off.
