1980 Cb650z Head
« on: February 18, 2024, 08:14:16 AM »
Hello.

Just started to put back together my Cb650 after a long hiatus. Havent touched it in more than 4months. I was putting the head back on. I have put the camshaft to right position after fiddling and fighting with it for an hour. Now when i put the rocker/lifter case on. It is hitting the tappets. When i loosen the tappets it goes down a bit but after it goes Couple of milimeters it hits to another tappet/rocker. What could be the case. All the tappets are loose now and the "rocker case" or whatever it is has a big gap between it and the Head. Ill attach a picture if i can.

No matter where you put the engine some valves will be open so the cover will need pulling down with the bolts BUT did you read the manual about holding up the rockers whilst fitting cover, if not you will probably have bent some valves and possibly cracked guides

Have fitted it on by hand. So i havent really whacked it. My manual didnt say anything about holding the rockers up. I will try and do that tomorrow.

I took pics of the pages from the official FSM which describes the cylinder head cover reassembly & installation procedures.

There isn't much more involved than what you did, so I think something isn't aligned or isn't sitting in place properly.

Dont know why the 650 should be different from 500/550 book especially when it is purported to have higher lift
