Road racers what tires are you using for your CB750?
« on: February 19, 2024, 02:40:07 PM »
Of course I did a search and like oil this question is very subjective.

I have been using Bridgestone BT-45s for years and like them but looking to see what else there is such as the BT-46? How do they differ from BT-45? I have Avon Roadriders on my K2 but they are no longer made. Looking for a modern sporty tire that fits our wheels prefer stock sizes although could go to a 120/18 (rear) and 110/90 (front) if need be.

Requirements for my riding in New England:
1. Good in the wet
2. Good in the twisties
3. Good at speed with no tracking on tar snakes or highway concerete slabs

Anyone got any favourites?
Thanks
Andy

I just bought some Road Riders, new stock. They moved the factory out of the UK (to France, I think) but still making them.

Thank you for posting that link.  I've been looking for a set of those tires for my 550F, unsuccessfully, for weeks.  I love Avon tires.  They handle great in any conditions, and they wear evenly.

Yeah,  have used the Avons for several years.  Gettin em got hard during the pandemic and had to use other stuff.  Have not had Michelins on a cb yet, but they have worked great on my Suzuki GS1100.  Most recently put BT46's on a cb and I give them a BIG thumbs up!
If it works good, it looks good...

They are fine on my 750, but the rear is showing wear after 1500 miles.

I’m not seeing any new Avons available in the US… only a few remnants of remaining stock.
I liked them on my 400f…. BT46s feel a bit different, but are essentially equivalent to the roadriders.
It’s been too many years since I had bt45s on a bike, but around pits people like them enough.
CB750K5 - Slowly putting back together.
GS1100LT - Nicely upgraded over the years.
CB400F - Production lightweight race bike.

I’m on non standard wheels but will be burning up another set of BT-45 on the Honda. Glad to see Bridgestone update and support the “vintage” with a new BT-46.

MaoMart search can be goofy, I found that by searcing Avon MC tires or some such thing.

"Sold and shipped by Perf-Moto"  ;)

Yeah Scott, I noticed that too.  Wally gets a cut of the sale, a "trick" they learned from Amazon.

A couple months back, I bought tires for the '46 Ford online at WalMart.  15" Goodyears for $64 each and they came directly from the Goodyear warehouse in Ohio.  [It costs money to keep items in stock].
They are $84 now...

For actual racing I believe Matt's using the Conti Attack 3's on both his Sportsman and Superbikes. Can't remember off the top of my head what the handful of CB750's at Roebling this past weekend were running.

I can tell you I was faster than all of them on my 650, but I'm on Battlax slicks  ;D

Anyone have any experience with the BATTLAX 46's? That's what I was looking to put on my CB550.

https://www.bridgestone.com/products/motorcycle_tires/products/detail/pr176/yes sir!  As I posted above, an excellent performing tire.  Great grip, confident feel and they balanced up nicely!   Don't have many miles on them yet, so no word on durability.  Gonna assume that as with most soft, sticky, performance tires they won't last long.  I generally get 5-6000 miles out of a rear on my cb750's, and that's usually running 'em right down to the cords.  Would expect slightly more on a 550.

Awesome. I think that's the set I'll invest in. I currently have some Heidenau's that look great with a "vintage style tread",  but they track and wobble like crazy on grooved pavement. Plus they're getting old, time for a replacement set.

+1 ... I have one on the rear of my K4, very good tire, highly recommended.

$114 for the 110/90-18 [for 550 rear] is a good deal....

$149 for the 120mm....

Thanks, Steve-O: I think I'll try those on the 550 I'm doing for my book. :)
That 130 MPH rating might be important when I'm done with it? ;)

Just got some fresh BT46's installed! Should I run the stock PSI in the CB550 manual? Or will these tires require a different PSI?

depends how hard you push...pick a cold tire starting point, say 32 psi, now ride until they are fully warm, which will increase the pressure.  You only want them to increase about 2 psi between cold and hot...so, lower pressure  will run hotter, pushing harder will run hotter, running hotter will increase pressure...

or, stock 550 pressure works fine for general riding and probably best durability.  Some folks feel that is a pretty mushy feeling and you get a better feel around 32-37psi...this is where you stop using the tire as a crutch for poor suspension
If it works good, it looks good...
