A Thought on Candy Bacchus Olive
« on: February 21, 2024, 01:12:10 PM »
I've been doing a lot of reading, trying to find out where to get that Candy Bacchus Olive paint for my CB350Four, preferably in a 1-part, and yes, VMR has it in both spray cans and pints/quarts, or what have you, starting at $125 if you want that factory look and want to spend $75 for a 12-oz spray can, plus $44 for the basecoat...there's also the Jeep Moss or Jade greens to consider, but I was digging around and came across Krylon Green Gold ($17 at Michaels craft stores), which looks pretty close, but it might be a bit too sparkly, not unlike the Orange Flake Sunrise on the CB750's, but less so...so since I had a spare CB350F tank with a big crease-dent in the front that I'm probably not going to use(this is not off of the bike I want to restore), I decided to do a little basecoating and topcoating with it, and here's what I got:

As you can see, I marked off different sections with different bases - bright silver, gold, Rustoluem Black Metallic, Colorite Gloss black, Turquoise (didn't have blue metallic handy) and gray primer and sprayed them all over with the Krylon Green Gold...

Every single panel came out 'blah', some didn't even show a difference until you got it in the sun - and Yes, I coated the whole tank - but that Colorite Gloss Black really popped...here it is in the garage under LED lights...that's three coats of the Green Gold over the gloss black; the other bases didn't really show anything...

It actually looks really good, the pics don't do it justice; I'm just wondering what you think...and it's Cheap, too!  :D

I always liked that Bacchus green color. Your first pictures look more jade green versus the Bacchus olive. The last picture with the shop LED lights looks more olive and closer to the Candy Bacchus green. If you're not concerned with a perfect oem match then I would go for it. I think it will look great.

Looks great. I went with VMR and am getting ready to paint a tank, fork ears and side covers. But I have a couple other tanks and may go this route...

I bought tank decals online a few months ago as well, if you're interested I can try to track down the site.

Speaking of paint, does anyone know the SIZE of the flakes used in the paint on the CB500F? I got an up-close look at the paint on mine and it seems a bit 'circusy'/glittery for me.  I was thinking of going with either a regular metallic orange or maybe a KustomCanz Flake kit in orange - they list their flake as '004 Hex', whatever that means - I assume it's the shape/size of the flake, but I don't know.

FWIW, Kustom Canz has Flake paint KITS consisting of a base, color coat and 2K Clearcoat starting at $45! Might be worth checking out. Anybody ever use these guys before?

Our Jeep and our Colorado ZR2 are both green, we like green.
My 750 is candy blue/green but the Bacchus green would be my other choice.

The photos taken with our phones I've found don't do these types of colors very well, the candy blue/green looks a lot bluer than it is.

Very true. My phone does that too. A friend had a body set painted by BD Cycles in a custom Freedom Green mix. Outside it shows green on my phone but inside under lights at the Riceorama show it looked almost the same as my K5 Planet Blue original paint.

IMHO there is a lot of subtle stuff going on with paint in general, most forward facing phone cameras have an IR cut filter for one thing. We have had some orange paint that a machine builder used on a machine at work that really pops at 950nm and screws with a laser safety scanner that we use everywhere, we have never had anything painted mess with them before.

Hey Dr. Frankenstein -- how much coverage did you get with a single can? How many do you think I'd need for a full tank, side covers and fork ears?

For all those parts, I'd think two cans of the gold-green would do it, with some left over, each can is only 8 or 10 ounces, as I recall. I put about three light coats of the gold-green over the gloss black section and noticed the more I laid down the gold-green the better it seemed to look, maybe just a shade deeper than the Candy Bacchus Olive, but it's real close. Finish it off with a good 2K Clear like SprayMax. Yes, it's a bit expensive, but worth it! SprayMax hardens up really nicely and leaves a very glossy finish. FWIW I did the tank and side covers for a '76 KZ400 with one can and it came out great. Be sure to read the directions as far as applying it goes, and definitely use a respirator - I got mine at Harbor Freight and it works really well. You do not want to be breathing in 2K Clear!
