Machine shop recommendations - chicago area
« on: September 09, 2020, 04:16:18 PM »
Hey all - anyone in the Chicagoland area have a go-to machine shop for small bore engines?  Looking to have sleeves bored and crank balanced for '75 cb400f.  After calling a half-dozen shops i found a guy who can do the jugs, but he says my crank is too small for him to work on.  I would prefer to deal with just 1 shop for all the machine work, anyone got a guy in the chicago area, or anywhere in northern illinois?

Thanks,
Kevin

Send everything to Kenny at CycleX in Wisconsin. That is close enough.

No luck with CycleX, they work on 750s almost exclusively.  Dont have small enough equipment for my 400, as is the case with most of the other shops ive contacted.

Contact Phil White in Waterford, MI. Yeah, its abut 4 hours away but he knows his #$%*.

The ol' Honda Doctor is retired but if you can get him on the phone, I know he still does a bore job or two over the summer for his motors.

Or check in at APE in Rosamond, CA. Member Big Jay is one of the original high performance wrenches on these bikes. What he cut his teeth on. UPS or USPS work.

Reviving a post from the dead…. But I have the same dilemma with my 400f.
Kev, if you see this, how’d it work out for you?

The problem is the "standard" boring bar is a Van Norman 944 and whilst that will go down to 500 it wont go down to the 400 which means another 3-4 grand just to buy a boring machine for small cylinders that you dont see very often, i think we can all agree that just aint economicaly viable.
I have a small bar but the po knackered the special micrometer and its 500 just to replace that!
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

That seems to be the case. 51.5mm is too small for the several shops I’ve contacted, but they’d be fine with 62mm for my 750 cylinders.

If cyclex can’t do it, send it to millennium….

https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&ved=2ahUKEwj72t2x4cqEAxVghYkEHYaaDXMQFnoECAcQAQ&url=https%3A%2F%2Fmillennium-technologies.com%2F&usg=AOvVaw3SjtQmfFVK2RgjRlZ7Tl2l&opi=89978449

They do excellent work and very few f*#* ups…

They’re a Nikasil replater, but they can bore…if you need 4/10,000th clearance that’s what you’ll get..

Marine Crankshaft can do your crank and more….they’re not very local though….
