Cycle X Ultimate Clutch Kit
« on: March 22, 2024, 02:52:44 PM »
I ordered the kit for my 74 CB750K and hopefully get around to installing in the week or so.  I am just tired of the bike sounding like a dryer full of wing nuts at idle.  I have read some mixed reviews on the system so I will post results when done.......The vendor claims it all but eliminates clutch rattle.....Appears to of excellent quality......

The clutch stop screw affects the rattle too.
The stop screw that holds the arm.
1/4-1/2 turn out from bottom according to manual.
1/2 turn out cause more rattle than 1/4.
Too little can cause slip.
I have redone it on warm engine too just to ensure needed play.

Going in my keeper 74.  I am truly the second owner, bought it from the original guy who purchased it new in 1974 in Tennessee.  I think it has around 16 or 17K on it now and a fun fact I have to correct one day, when it was registered new in 74 they dropped the middle number out of the vin.  It got titled like that. I have copies of the original paperwork, and when I transferred it in Virginia, it went though with the same number.  One of those things to fix way down on my list. Always fun dealing with the Division of Motor Vehicles regardless of where you hand your hat.  I will try and document with some shots and input and give a final opinion after install. I always get hit with files to big here when using my cell phone so I will see what I can do......

I just bought a CB350F with a Minnesota title that Minnesota dropped the F in the middle of the serial number.  I tried with the state of Indiana to get plates and a title but it was a no go so we had to get a corrected title from Mn.  Thankfully they did take care of it.  Indiana requires on motor vehicles that are bought out of state to get a police inspection before going to the BMV.   That was how it was discovered.

The one I just saw in another engine here just eliminated the dual-sprung plate, using regular steel plates instead. That's the easiest way to stop the rattle. I use the GL1000 clutch's back plate (1978-1979 version) which is thicker than a regular plate, at the back of the stack, and remove the sprung one.

No idea if it’s the same most of the posts on this thread aren’t clutch related. I’m keen to learn!

Well I installed the kit today and with the nasty weather I have only taken the bike around the block, but I must say it shifts beautifully, much smoother than before and the clutch has a good smother pull.  Of course I will admit while the hub was accessible some extra holes were drilled according to Hondaman's mod so either the kit or the holes helped, probably a little of both.  Now in reference to the noise or rattle, I would say a fair estimate is about a 40% reduction, it is still there, just not as much volume.  My biggest complaint about the kit is total lack of directions, you get a photo showing the line up the discs and plates. I am by no stretch of the imagination a seasoned mechanic, it would be helpful to just have the full procedure in writing. I did have the advantage of having installed a few overall's in the past and had a little prior knowledge to fall back on.  For example, soaking the discs, sharp edges of the metal plates facing in the same direction, which direction the the taps and washers go in assembly.  Some shots are attached and I know the key question from folks reading this thread, would I recommend the kit, I want to put a few more miles on before going all in, but with just the short spin so far there is an improvement.  Damn, I might have a future in politics.

Photos
a, Kit components
b. My screw chart  (This is for the metal screws-at 75 no paper needed for the other kind)
c. Modified lifter plate (I already had the same lifter plate in place as in the kit.  Broke the original during an earlier disc replacement.)
d, Lifter plate bearing (Kit only comes with the other bearing, no center, so you have to press out your old one.  Again directions needed, I just used my original plate.)
e. Order of discs and plates (You end up with metal to metal at the front and back of the pack, seems weird but works great.)

Interesting stackup with the metal-to metal parts, right? They don't slip against each other, so it's not a problem in real life (only in internet arguments...). I might mention that after a few more miles with a hotter engine, the primary chain should get lubed a little better and it may get quieter from that. When they have been noisy for a long time it seems to kick out some of the lube in the pins of the primary chains, making them noisier.

When you start riding it regularly again, take note of: does the clattering stop above 1500 RPM? If so, then the rest of the noise is due to uneven spark or carb balance. The uneven spark can be either a degree or two difference between the "F" marks of 1-4 and 2-3 at idle speeds, or some much-too-soft springs on the spark advancer, which makes the spark cam not sit still at idle speeds.

Thank you Mark, as always valuable information.  I know I need to do some additional maintenance, "ie" I need to install a good quality set of carb boots, the ones on there currently are a mixture from left over projects and fitment is not all that great.  Add tp that list,  check the timing again, set lash, and all the other fun things needed before riding season kicks off.  I will post follow up on the clutch kit as the road time increases.  Have a Happy Easter one and all, hope you find all your eggs.....

George

Took the bike out today and did about 20 miles to make sure it was good and hot.  I must say it is the best shifting K I have ever thrown a leg over.  Neutral is there at a touch.  With the clutch in at a stop, very quiet, still some noise in neutral but not nearly as loud when warm. In all probability primary chains.    Well would I recommend the Ultimate Kit, yes I think it was worth the investment.  If reliability ever becomes an issue I will certainly let everyone know.....

Good job!
When you next throw a timing light on it, check this: if the timing 'jitters' back-and-forth under a strobe light, the spark advancer mounting shaft (in the end of the crankshaft) may well be bent. If they are more than 0.006" out of true, the timing 'jitters' and the primary chains dance - sort of an old rock-n-roll dance. :)
