Speedo cable spinning backwards.
« on: March 10, 2024, 05:03:11 PM »
As mentioned in a previous post I'm trying to set up dual discs on my 72K 750. As part of this I also want to flip the forks side to side so that the brakes are behind the forks and lower.
Having done this I now realize the speedo cable turns the wrong way.
Is there any way to flip the brakes behind the forks and still retain the speedo?

Look at this.. shouldn’t be a problem with the rotation.

Don't flip the front wheel. The speedo drive must remain on the right side.

There are different offsets side to side. I didn't think it possible to reverse them w/o flipping the wheel.
I notice this guy does not have the adjuster bolts installed. Is that acceptable?? Does that negate the different offsets??

Back to the garage for more puzzling over how to get there.....

The front wheel of the pre-F0 750, post-K0, is offset to the right side about 3mm. When flipping the forks around to install dual brakes you may need to relace the wheel over the 3mm to make the discs fit up right. In any case you must check the alignment of the 2nd disc's caliper to the 2nd disc, as bolting it to the existing mounts (if it is a pre-3/1972 frame build) will set the brake pads at an angle to the disc face. This needs to be shimmed out at the mount for the pivot.

I have seen the "brute force" method applied occasionally where the builder took off all the adjusters, installed new oversized EBC pads and "wore them in" to fit. Bad practice: it leaves no adjustment once the pads do wear in, which means the pads won't be useful very long - maybe 1 season of riding at best.

Custom builders do all sorts of that sh!t. They are built to look at, not to use.

Hondaman what would think of this plan. Grind the taller boss down and then the right sized washer (spacer) to the short side. This seems like a very simple fix.

Might not have explained that very well. Can I overcome the wheel offset by changing the length of the cast bosses on the fork slider. Shorten one and add a spacer to the other side. This should allow be to flip the forks and retain the speedo drive. Thoughts?

Is anyone else confused? I'd flip the forks and leave the wheel normal. Then check the brake caliper alignment.
All of the conjecture in the world won't tell you what tolerance stack you will end up with.
I did it to a 76F once, everything worked but then I made a matching right rotor fender and put it all back to stock appearing, except dual discs. I ran two long brake lines direct to the calipers and put the brake light switch in the banjo bolt.

Sort of why I did not flip forks, I wanted to reduce the variables.

Don't flip the front wheel. The speedo drive must remain on the right side.

Back in 1977 I had one of the guys out back install dual discs on my K6.
The forks were swapped to have the calipers on the back which gave far better braking.
The speedo was kept on the right side for proper rotation of the speedo drive.
I don't know the details on how the speedo drive was reconfigured to work, whether the drive flange was cut or the rotor was cut for the drive to fit as I was working the parts department when he did it.

I put 78F Comstars on 76F and did the same 2 line no splitter stainless route on it.

The confusion comes from the wheel being offset. When you flip it then that offset must be compensated for. So far I have been unable to find out how people overcome this.

I think I'm just going to go ahead measure up the difference and then make it back by cutting or adding washers.

It's frustrating that many have done this but I can't seem to get a straight answer.

I realize now that flipping the wheel causes speedo issues. But putting the calipers behind the forks means dealing with the wheel offset because you flip the forks.

I thought it was only the early bikes that had offset wheels

Sorry two different bikes. I have 76F but the fork flip is for a 72ish K.

That is still not an early bike in this instance

If it helps I have a 68' CD125. The brakes on it work great
