CB175
« on: March 17, 2007, 06:54:13 PM »
A friend of mine is getting rid of one for cheap ($100), it has a seized engine but most everything else is there.  Any advice?  I'd love to get it and make it a trainer for a couple of people to learn to ride on that are afraid of the 550 (My brother's only 5'2").

How hard are parts to come by?  I'm talking just regular run of the mill stuff, cables, points, carb kits, etc.

Also, any advice on the seized engine?  The story is it was left on its side outside 2 winters ago and ever since its engine has been seized.

Thanks!

First question, did you repremand your friend for treating and old Honda like that! Shame!

Most likely the oil settled in that side of the engine, in the main bearings and gummed up.
I am only making an educated guess.
Any one else have and idea?

As far as parts go I am not sure.  I sold mine 24 years ago.  Wish I hadn't.

Gummed up meaning....rebuild?  As in new pistons/rings/etc., or just an overhaul, tear down and clean up?

I've got 2 CB175, both 1970.  I've been getting stuff for them on e-buy, they're available & cheap (as usual, if you're not in a hurry).  Most of the bike swaps out with the CL175, so if you're good with the parts fiche, the market is even more open.  It's a SOHC2; basically 1/2 a SOHC4 so almost all means & methods are the same.  Unfortunately, neither of mine works right now (I've had 1 for a year and the other for a month...), but I can't wait to get one up & running - it looks like a blast to bomb around town on.

Unless it was running when it was on it's side, I would say just a tear down and clean up.  One question I do have, how cold did it get?  I don't know if extreme cold can damage internal parts or cause oil to freeze and thus cause cracking of bearings, etc..  Maybe some one else here has some ideas.

My first one sat behind my shed, under a tarp for the entire winter last year; and I live in Buffalo.  I did get it to fire up, so an extended freeze didn't seem to kill it.

Should be easy to find most parts. Ebay has most of what you need but watch the price. I found a set of 175 NOS pistons with rings last month for $25.00.

I am doing a SL175 and have found almost everything using David Silver, Western Hills and ebay. Don't forget your local dealer. You will be surprised at what they can get for 175's on the cheap.

I have a sidecover I found that was off a cl175. Bike is long gone.  It was older I would guess early/mid 60's.    Anybody want it?
