New Sensors - Few questions

Hello All,

As I have been rewiring my bike I've thought about what additional sensors and such I could add. I am running a Motoscope Pro with an A breakout box currently. I am thinking of swapping in a B breakout so I can gain some additional sensors. Namely an Oil Temp, Oil Pressure, and Air Temp.

The Air temp is super simple so I'm good there.

My working though on the Oil Temperature is to get the Motogadget M12x1.5mm temp sensor and use it as my oil drain plug. I'd loos my magnetic pickup but would have a clean plug to pick up temperature. This is the sensor: https://revivalcycles.com/collections/motogadget-parts/products/temperature-sensor-m12x1-5



The pressure sensor has me a bit more flummoxed. From what I can tell a good place to put it is to replace the old galley plug on the right side off the motor under the points. I believe the thread here is an M20x1.5mm. Motogadet has a pressure sensor but it looks way to bulky to put there. So I'm thinking I try and find a compact M20 sensor or machine an adapter to go from M20 to something like M12 so I can run a sensor like this:



Am I heading down the right path if I'm wanting to add these sensor types or am I mission something??

I have only one question.  WHY thes bikes have run decades without and are these robust enough for a vibratory old motorcycle
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Fair question bryanj. Short answer is because I can... I'd also argue if modern tech was available when these bikes were new it'd be on them. I also just want to try and see if I can get it to work. It's fun!

My engine is also quite modified so I'm a fan of having some additional data points to monitor what is going on.

No problem, your bike your ideas, ijust have this funny feeling new tech wont like old bikes.
I know from new trucks how many sensors fail, as long as not critical to running go for it

Are you going to run the drain plug in the tank or in the oil pan ? Edit: Oops forgot your bike is not a CB750K, yours might have only one drain plug.

folks clamp a temp sensor to cyl head fins or somewhere on the head for head temp for micro squirt, that might be a nice data point too :-). There is a VW sensor people use for that. there are also combo map and intake air temp sensors that will give you two data points for one sensor.

Ya, I only have the one drain plug. I got that idea from a post by MRieck on another thread. He knows his stuff so I'm thinking that is a safe bet. I was doing more searching yesterday and I found some interesting thread reducers to go from a M20 to a M12 to run a pressure sensor in place of the oil galley plug. And I like that idea of running the the air temp on the fins. That should be to hard to get mounted.

Not at the moment but I am considering it still.

The main sensor I would like to add would be for oil level. Oil temperature is not so necessary to monitor with the climate here  (and modern oils), and  the only times I have had a SOHC4 oil pressure light come on have been within microseconds of the engine seizing. Maybe a pressure warning that operated at a higher pressure would have been better though. However an oil level warning could alert you to a blown oilseal before other damage happened.

One other sensor I have wondered about is if it would be possible to add a knock sensor to detect pre-ignition. My Yoshi 400F is fairly highly stressed and that could be a useful warning.

AFIK the CB500/550s don't need one. Their temperature household is quite good and a pressure gauge would require you'd have your eyes on it constantly which is not realistic.
I've wondered about a knock sensor myself. For a reason I don't know, our bikes rarely knock, in comparison to cars. Does anyone know how to fit such a piezo sensor? All wiring diagrams I have seen are too complicated, as they also deal with adapting the advance as soon as knock is there. For us a simple idiot light would be fine. Seems like it would be an easy fix. Anyone?

No, motor is at 592 now. Not sure I've seen a 550 taken above 700...

I've thought about adding a cooler but not sure it's needed. I'm more keeping it in mind for consideration if I run into temp issues. I've already remote mounted my filter so adding a cooler wouldn't be very difficult. Would just need to work out the mounting. I was more after sensor help on this post but these are the basics of my motor:

- Crank was lightened and balanced
- Rods were balanced and 750 bolts installed.
- Pistons are DP592/61s
- Cam is a Yoshimura Isle of Mann "B" grind
- Head has a stage 3 from mrieck along with new valves.
- Intake valves backcut
- Transmission rebuild and undercut
- Clutch converted to hydraulic.
- Remote oil filter
- CR26 Carbs
- Exhaust is a 4 into 1 from Motogpwerks
- CognitoMoto air intake
- C5 ignition

I am not going to put a gauge down on the motor, just sensors that I'll wire up to a Motoscope Pro and if I mount correctly I don't see it sticking out past the "points" cover.

Did some quick looking into knock sensors. I'm only a little familiar with them and only on modern cars. I did find this guys though. Bit expensive....

There do seem to be other ones but the outputs are headphones. Not really running to a light.
