CB400F - Headlight Electrics
« on: April 10, 2024, 10:32:35 AM »
Hi, I had an issue with my headlight not working (neither headlight nor park light coming on). After investigation I found that there was no voltage to either side of headlight fuse or taillight fuse. Further investigation identified a loose wire under the nest of wires under the tank. This wire appears to be black/yellow. I did fit a David Silver replacement right hand switch some time ago and seem to remember that the wiring for this was not as expected. My question now is that looking around the ~nest~ the only place I can see that the wire could have come from is a connector that appears to have a blue and a black wire already in (see picture - loose wire is to left in front of horn and connector I think it fits is to the right). When I did put the loose wire into this connector the headlight, park and taillight all worked using the right hand switch so it seems to be correct. My question is does the electric connections seem OK to do this? I do have the wiring diagram but cannot see a connection /junction that looks like this. Any help would be appreciated.

Rutherb, you did not specify your model CB400F. Various countries had various wirings, so wiring diagams vary accordingly. In other words we need an 'area code' to be able to help you. I looked at your profile, but, alas, I couldn't determine your home country either.

The year is irrelevant. There has been a CB400F, F1 and F2*. Provided wiring remained unchanged, here's a wiring diagram for UK model: http://manuals.sohc4.net/cb400/technical_reference/WD400UK.gif

David Silvers do have an info sheet about that switch as to how the wiring colours translate to the Honda ones, it'd be worth giving them a call and asking them to send you it.

It's pretty surprising that they don't bother to include it with every switch anyway.

I wired a US CB400F using a DSS euro right control to the euro spec with the parking light in the headlight. As I remember, the wiring colors were pretty much correct once I eliminated the US spec male to male jumper. Then it wired and worked properly.  If it's working, I'd go with it.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I have found a link that explai9ns the David Silver replacement part wiring here http://www.sohc.co.uk/index.php/topic,30937.msg297359.html#msg297359   and that seems to confirm that the black/yellow connects to black.

So based on the 5-way connector that I have which currently has 2 x black and 2 x blue I shall connect the black/yellow (currently loose wire) into the spare connector on the 5 way (see picture). Hopefully that will sort it out !!!

Thanks again.
