CB400 Mirrors
« on: April 13, 2024, 07:47:13 AM »
Have stock mirrors on my 1976 CB400 and they are utterly useless. Any recommendations for something that doesn't look too bad and will let me see more than my elbows? Not a fan of bar end. Thank you.

Kawasaki Z900 type
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

This was my inexpensive way to resolve the issue:

My CB750 K6 got Z900 mirrors (black) to see more than my elbows.

I found a good alternative to my CB750 K2.
I ordered 2 sets just for sure, the price was right too!
Chromed version.

Thank you all. I found some Emgo mirrors from my old KZ1000 in my junk box and they seem to work a little better than the stock mirrors. I just ordered a couple of standoffs to raise the left hand mirror to be a bit more even in height with the right one. Will see how it works.

The problem with mirrors when using lower handlebars.

I started to use Z900 mirrors when stock mirrors were not stable in higher speeds.
A friend recommended a pair of used Z900 mirrors I got cheap in the early 80's.
Worked much better.
Not crystal clear but I saw the cars behind me on Autobahn in 170kmh and more.

Back to stock mirrors 2015. I had tried too cheap Z900 knock offs that did not last long. One mirror moved on its own.

Ordered new Z900 mirrors 2022, not cheap.
The chromed cheap ones a good alternative so far.

I really like these extenders on my Ducati Monster:

1972 Honda CB350F
1976 Moto Morini 3 1/2 Sport
1978 Honda CBX
1997 Suzuki Bandit 1200
1999 Ducati Monster 750

Bar end mirrors with Napoleon mirrors are coated mirror for less glare and are said to be very stable vibration- less or greatly reduced on most bikes that don’t shake like a cement mixer…
Need a good handle bar though… thin ones can vibrate worse
Most metal ones that are chromed if made from good steel don’t vibrate awfully…

Not sure if you can find the Napoleons now…

Well I think I have determined the best solution for me.
1) Using the stock mirrors with standoffs and/or the extenders did not help much. A little better perhaps, but still not good enough.
2) Use of the Emgo (cheap mirrors I took off a KZ1000) mirrors are much better, due to the shape I guess.
3) Use of the Emgos with the extenders helped the vision, but looked funky and did not improve it that much from just using the stock mounts.
4) Best option was using the Emgos with two standoffs on the left mirror to raise it to just about the height of the right mirror and rearward view is much better and doesn't look hideous.
