Question for “Sandcast” Experts
« on: July 04, 2024, 02:04:58 PM »
Just putting all the covers back together for my project. There was no trace of any black trim paint around the HONDA logo on the alternator cover. Some restored bikes have it, some don’t. Does anyone know/remember how they looked when new?

I've only ever seen original ones with black paint around the HONDA but a lot of owners don't bother re applying the paint after cleaning / aqua blasting / chemical dipping etc and then polishing.
Trust me I'm a Nurse, I promise it won't hurt....much

John,
I used a couple of these when I painted the inside of emblems with good results;

I've used the black permanent fine tip magic markers with good results. The tip outlines the letters and edge without going over. Touch up is a breeze. I like those paint pens I think I'll have to give those a try sometime.

I swear by the "wash" method to paint recessed areas like this.  Essentially, paint the entire area black, then almost immediately (paint's still tacky, but not running wet) start rubbing the paint off the raised lettering and edges with a rag soaked in paint thinner/mineral spirits.  You get a much crisper edge, and it's a lot less hassle then trying to detail paint around everything.

Your milage may vary, of course.

 My Sandcast had been molested by the original owner's son, he pulled off all of the covers and chromed them so it's no good for that kind of comparison.
  When it was put back together, he got banned from riding it as punishment for his transgressions and that's how it eventually came to be mine. After they nagged me for a while I offered to sell it back to the family for what I felt is a below market $25K. They aren't talking to me now.

I dunno man you have so much practice that I was thinking you might just pull the engine out of the frame and freshen everything up once a year so as to not have to do normal maintenance on a "dirty" bike :-).

 Mine still has the chrome on the rocker cover and the 9 bolt clutch cover. I'm conflicted whether to pull the motor to have them stripped or not. The parts are in excellent condition or the choice would be easier.
