Shifter Cover Install Procedure

I know this is crazy, but can't get the shifter cover on to my 1978 750F. I have filed it to fit as much as I dare, and still have about 1/8 of an inch to go to bottom out. I just do not understand this. Can anyone please provide me with the proper install steps. Thanks.

Have you by any chance a dowel in the cover AND a dowel in the casig?
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Remember "Its always in the last place you look" COURSE IT IS YOU STOP LOOKIN THEN!

Does the dowel fit easily in both sides?
If you have a spare dowel you can check the empty side.

Are the dowels absolutely necessary, and are they removeable? Are they supposed to be in the case, or the cover? Thank you.

There is a dowel in the case AND a dowel in the shifter body. Yes.

Old dowels often in need of grinding off dirt and marks, grit 400 paper. If oval shape, replace it. I ordered several dovels years ago.
This dovel same size as under cam towers.

Cover hole can have marks so dovel will not fit.
Aftermarket gasket usually fit bad.
Some holes need to be widened 
with a sharp knife since hole pattern is wrong.

You should have only one dowel per hole;the problem may be if a 2nd one was already jambed in there and it creates a gap,it can cause sealing issues on the gasket surfaces.

Wherever dowels are used, there will be bigger diameter bore for the dowels to fit in, matching holes in the engine case. It's not rocket science. Look closely at the holes for the difference.
As per said, check the condition of the dowels that they are round and not out of shape, dinged, rusted. Clean up the dowels or replace them as needed. The dowels are wear items to replace as needed. They are to locate the gasket in the proper position.

This cover does not seem to fit, irrespective of dowels. It won't fit on, even with the dowels removed. I'm quite certain that the stator housing I purchased is the correct one, and the shifter cover has been on for 46 years. I have been riding and working on bikes for 55 years. I'm totally confused as to why the cover will not fit on. FRUSTRATED.

Check the wire that goes down to the neutral light switch.  It's crammed into an impossibly narrow gap between the stator and shift covers, and is very easy to pinch.  I struggled with that for quite a bit before I got my covers to lie flat.

Did someone fit washers behind the stator? That would cause the stator to be the thickness of the washer out of place and that could cause your problem...

I do know there is a trick to getting the cover on the '78 K.  Maybe that is what he is running into.

Has to be installed at a certain angle.

I do know there is a trick to getting the cover on the '78 K.  Maybe that is what he is running into.

Has to be installed at a certain angle.

The sprocket cover requires a "twist of the wrist", while the shifter (transmission) cover is a straightforward install. Did you remove/reinstall any shifter components that may now be interfering? Some pictures might help.
