So after a long winter, and a few teaser rides, I finally got out on a 60 degree day. About 3 blocks from home I was involved in an accident. I am ok, but my bike needs new forks, front wheel, guages, basically a new front end. I'll post picks later, but my question for now is what other forks will fit on a 76' 550K? Any leads on the needed parts is greatly appreciated. Anything else I should be weary of in getting it back on the road?

I'm glad to hear you're okay. I was involved in an accident on monday. A car came into my lane and ran me off the road into an adjacent intersection. I hit a patch of sand and brakes became useless. I almost laid her down but corrected in time to hit the curb head on. I rolled onto the curb, no damage it appears. Gotta be careful out there! I don't know any specifics but if it were me in your position, I'd be looking at possible dual disc conversions for the front end.

I am really looking into that option. Wear a helmet people! Even with it, I was unconcious for 10 minutes.

Wow, Glad you are OK. Keep an eye out on Ebay for replacements. How are the Triples? If they are OK, you could get new Tubes from Cycle-X - People on here have given them a big thumbs up - and lowers show up quite a bit. Also look around for online salvage yards. A good place to try is:

Put in your requests, with a description and/or part #, and you will get numerous responses from different yards around the country.

Very sorry to see your misfortune; did you go to hospital and have a THOROUGH EXAMINATION? I knew a fellow that had a bike accident w/ what appeared to be a minor head injury, he felt ok, went home and DIED that night from hidden brain injury. Better play it very cautiously.

Frame might be bent, before you start buying parts you should see if it is totaled or not.

Did the whole hospital thing. They released me, and I have a follow up appointment today. Just a lot of bruising.

The frame looks to be ok, but I'll have a buddy check it out too.

If you look at the paint on the frame tubes (especially around the head stock, where the triple tree fits into) and look for any paint that is cracked. That is a sure sign that that tube is bent. There might be other ways, but that's one I know of. BTW, I too am glad that you are okay. You can never be too careful about possible injuries.

In answer to your question 500 twin parts will fit and they aint too popular so may be cheaper, Not sure if the rev counter will be accurate though

Glad you're ok !! I dumped my 750 this past fall, tweaking the front end. Harry, at Cooper's [used parts] in New Hampshire had all the parts....tubes, sliders, springs, etc that I needed at great prices.

ive got a set of 550 forks in decent shape (read not bent) and usable but they need new fork seals. i'm in northern illinois (mchenry area), let me know if youre interested.

Glad you made it through intact Bro. That unconcous thing sucks. The last time it happened to me I didn't wake up till the next day. At least the bike survived and I only have a little draim bamage

Back to the "Q"... I think any the 500/550 SOHC as well as the 450/500 DOHC forks and trees will slot right in.

Thanks for the kind words and the offers of help and answers to my questions. Those are some of the many reasons that this particular forum is the best one around.

Back to the bike. Am I missing anthing? Assuming the MC is not damaged, can it and the break lines easily be resused? The triple trees look to be good, and I cannot find any cracks in the frame. The electrics seem to be working so hopfully I won't have to run wires through the clubmans again. Rear and front fender will need to be replaced. Bidding on a replacement speedo on ebay. Tire off current (bent) rim should be able to go on the replacement rim without too much issue.

I have not had the chance to start it up since, so I am not sure if anything happened to the engine. This will be a fun couple of weeks.

It could be that the lowers on your forks are OK....just the tubes need to be
replaced. That and a wheel and spokes for sure. Can't tell from photos about
the headlight and brackets. I would really check the front brake parts over and
now would be a great time to go with stainless brake lines.

I had a couple of creases in by front fender from forgetting to remove a chain
lock

and a metal shop rolled them out so you can salvage it I'm sure.

This is sure a living testimonial for always wearing a helmet.

Always a downer to see a thread like this. Coming out intact is all that really matters (I'm a master of the obvious with that statement) and glad you are OK.

I've taken to wearing the Icon Mil Spec bright green safety vest full time, all the time, everytime I get on the bike. Drivers are just so damned zoned out and frankly, I really don't fully get it... when I'm behind the wheel I always gave bikers a wide berth even b/4 I was riding again meself. I've just had the daylights scared out of me too many times by having my right away violated so often that I took to the vest. I'm also going to a loud colored helmet... the hell with the fashion statement I don't want to get hurt and wind up with fused joints or worse.
