New Member Intro - 1971 CB 750 K1

Hi Folks!
Last summer I put my 1971 CB 750 K1 , which I've owned for 33 years, back on the road after 17 years of being stored.  Needless to say it took some work due to the fact that I did not prepare the bike for storage. Rust in the gas tank, cleaning out the carbs, rebuilding of the front disc brake caliper, hoses etc. and new tires. The bike fired up and ran great all summer.  Towards early fall I started to leak gas out of the overflow tubes. I plan on cleaning and/or rebuilding them this spring.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Give or take a few years and one year difference on the model, sounds just like what I went through almost 3 years ago. When you say you "cleaning out the carbs," how far did you go? Complete teardown and rebuild?

Oh, welcome by the way, any pictures?
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

Hey Ed,
Welcome, so is your bike all original. I've recently bought one that needs some work but I'd like to do a complete and accurate restoration. I'm might be asking you a few questions about yours. :)
Will some tell me where the gosh darn kill switch is!!!

Guys,

I didn't do a total tear and rebuild of the carbs, just some carb cleaner and blowing out the jets with compressed air.
Yes, my bike is totally stock with the exception of the rear tail light, which is from a '74 and is bigger than the original '71. I still have the original '71 taillight.  The one original piece I am missing is the seat strap.  I took it off years ago because I found I was sitting on the strip for most of the ride and founf it uncomfortable.

Welcome, Ed.  Is that a current picture?  If so, she looks to have weathered the years well.  I'm no carb expert; however, I would guess that your carbs would need complete rebuilds after sitting that long.

Yes, that is a recent picture taken this summer.  I am the second owner and the bike has 27,000 miles.  When you say "complete rebuilds" are you referring to the available kits?  I noticed that none of them include floats and can't seem to find them.  Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome!

You shouldn't need to replace floats, unless one is damaged for some reason.  Even the other parts may not need replacing, though you won't know till you disassemble the carbs completely.  After sitting without prior preparation, I would bet the consensus will be you should completely tear done the carbs as far as they go.  Clean everything thoroughly and mercilessly.  Make sure jets all get serious attention.  That alone may solve all your problems.

Before you go about it, do a search for all the (many!) threads on carb rebuilding and cleaning.  You'll see tips like watching out for o-rings you didn't know exist, etc.

Great to hear such a fine bike is back on the road!  Ride it in good health.
