CB350F 1974 Extra Piece
« on: June 02, 2024, 07:15:45 PM »
While waiting to recover my regulator from USPS, I’m helping my host here in Greencastle with his 350F. The bike has sat for several years and he doesn’t think the engine has been taken apart before.

He tells me that when he dropped the oil pan, he found the attached part in it. I think this as a cap from the clutch outer in the primary sprocket.

How could this have got there without previously dismantling the engine?
Is it possible this just dropped out while he was taking things apart? He didn’t dismantle the sprocket assembly.

And most importantly, if this is not something that has recently dropped out, what will happen if he just continues - the engine is closed up again – and runs the engine?

Is it hollow with one end capped or is it solid?

Looks like an oil control jet like the CB500/550 ones but it's different to the CB350 one, so maybe not ?

I think it is the cap that goes between the spring and roller in the starter clutch, to check the motor has to be split

Definitely looks like it's from starter clutch.
Here's one in my 400/4

The real question is what might happen if he starts the motor and it is missing? Presumably the spring and roller would be missing also.

He is certain he didn’t dismantle any of the transmission shafts and is almost certain the engine has never been apart before.

So the second question is whether there is a way this could have fallen out and into the pan?

The only way to know what is there is inspection.
The starter clutch was apart by someone in the past.

There's only a small hole (about 3/4" or 19mm) diameter that I remember at the bottom of the engine case on the alternator's side, under that cover. It could possibly give a path for the starter plunger to make it to the tranny, but it's quite a long and hilly trip. I guess oil could push it along, though, if it made it to that hole.

It can only come out if the roller is removed and that needs the gear removed so it has to have been apart
