As far as I know the frame is made of brazed (not welded) thinwalled chromemoly tubing and finished in nickel plating  :)

Just like the Rickman CR.

Those bikes are just too cool.
I've got an Egli framed 750, unfortunately it isn't that Egli. This one is named Steve, lives an hour away from me.  L0L.  It is stretched, lowered and raked, you can take the motor apart in the frame like a 750A and a stock K tank fits it. He had a really good fabricator.

The Rickman and Seeley frames were made from Reynolds 531 tubing, which is not the same alloy as chrome-moly. 531 has 5 parts manganese, 3 parts carbon, and 1 part molybdenum. It is always brazed, as the temperatures required for welding weaken the material. Chrome-moly can be welded.
The Seeley frame is also wide, but not as wide as your Martin!

A couple of pics of a Martin GSX frame that has had the plating removed.
The slightly yellow brazing can be seen all over, and it contrasts a lot to the tig welded repair of the pipe for the fairingstay in the second pic.

I like the look of that braze and it looks something better than torch-applied.
How do they apply the brazing to the Moto Martin frame tubing ?

I'm not aware of any other method than oxy-acetylene brazing, but I'm no expert...
I would say that back in 1982 it was all hand-produced with oxy-acetylene but again, I'm no expert...

You can braze with an electric arc , but you are right back then frames were made using oxy acetylene
And so they should !

I have read but don't know from experience that the MAP gas kits can braze. I'm going to try it out and see.

This thing has now had a thorough clean-up, very satisfying feeling to remove dirt and grime that has been sitting for almost 25 years  :)
No obvious unexpected problems found underneath the dirt, and a quick hookup to a battery confirmed a working starter, lights and a healthy spark on all four plugs  :D

Well, ask and you shall recieve...

With no fuel and no battery, but WITH engine oil and brake fluid (and lots of dirt and burnout rubber... 8) ) the scale stops at 206.2 kilos (or 454.6 lbs).

How is the rear shock absorber ?

The Öhlins rear shock is fine, will of course be serviced before use and as the unit is fully rebuildable it should not cause any problems  :)

The work on getting the Martin back on the road has continued.

First on the list was getting the lowered rear end back to stock height.
To lower the bike the stock mounting point on the frame had been slightly modified, and the Öhlins shock itself is six millimeters shorter than the stock shock.
Solved both issues by manufacturing new plates in stainless steel which pushes the Öhlins shock back six millimeters past the stock mounting point and bolt them to the stock mount as pictured.
This solution also adds the possibility to alter the ride height if needed by manufactureing new plates with the needed measurments.

I also found out that the engine had been lowered an inch in the frame (3rd pic) to ensure a lower center of gravity. Again, good for the strip but not for the street...
Removed all the manufactured extra parts and raised the engine back to stock position (9th pic).
Manufactured new plates for the rear motor mounts, again in stainless steel.
And after all was said and done a weight reduction of 1220 grams could be noted.

Next up is to remove and disassemble the forks to get them back to stock height too.

To be continued...

...and Happy New Year to all  :D

Nice work !
I love seeing custom frames and learning the different characteristics of each material.
Do you know if a frame made from 531 tubing will have more flex than chromoly?

no 531 is very similar in behaviour , cromoly welds much better thats why it has taken over . nothing wrong with a 531 frame .

Better before- and after pics of the raised suspension and engine.
The visual difference is staggering, it looks so much lighter in roadbike trim compared to the dragrace setup  :D
