2005 BMW GS 1200

Hi,

I looked at a nice bmw gs the other day. The owner honestly admitted a leak between the boxer engine and transmission and clutch. The dealer thinks it’s a two-thousand usd repair. I’m interested if anyone has had experience with this problem before. Thanks!

If you are familiar with how car engine/trans mate together and the associated shaft seals, that is basically how this is built, right down to the car style, dry clutch.  So basically, to fix these seals, either the engine or transmission has to come out of the bike and I would assume it would be the transmission that has to come out.  I know there are at least a couple BMW special tools that are required and with shop rates currently over $100 an hour, $2000 for this job is reasonable.
If it works good, it looks good...

To gain access to the clutch, separating the driveline from the engine is rather simple actually. To remove the clutch and replace the rear seals does require a special tool, but that is pretty inexpensive. If you have any mechaincal acumen, this is a job you can do. BMW Boxer motors (especially early year models like th '05) are notoriously simple to service (by design).

You can look online here https://www.bobsmotorcycles.com/microfiche/bike-series/r-1200-gs-2005-07-usa/ for all the parts diagrams associated with the repair. There are many non-Dealer options for replacement parts, though seals and bearings I would only get from a dealer.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, that was my next question. Could I do it myself? I’ve heard that you should probably take out the clutch and have it rebuilt at the same time to avoid another disassembly.
