carburetter rubber plugs in the slow jet question
« on: June 15, 2024, 08:47:41 AM »
Hey fellas,
This is my first post as I just joined the site so thanks for having me!
I have a 1982 nighthawk CB 650 SC, which as many of you know seems to be a bit of a unicorn. I have just done a rebuild on the carbs with new seals and jets, but noticed there are no rubber plugs on the slow jet when I opened her up. I am assuming that a previous owner took them out for some reason. My question is do I need them And why? Also, any recommendations on where I could find the exact ones for my bike?
Thanks team!
Cheers
Brad

Is that the dohc or sohc 650….never keep that last year straight on the sohc design, think it was a 4 year run…

The rubber plugs used to be available from Sudco …but with them closing shop, not sure if dealer would have them or not..  yes, they are needed for correct carb operation.
K&L may carry a size for your carbs, them (CV) being common to many bikes.  Your bike isn’t such a unicorn as rarely seen, a few are out there, just fewer these days with their issues taking them off the road and places breaking them down for parts given they can make more money off them as parts than a whole bike most of the time.ignition system problems disable many of them and no easy solution and not enough of them out there to support aftermarket investment spells a slow painful death for many bikes. Those whom are handy adapt and modify other solutions but those are custom one offs mostly.

Thanks for the reply!
It is the SOHC engine. It switched to the DOHC in 83. I’ll do some looking around and see if I can’t find some rubber plugs for my bike. I was born in 1982 so it’s fun to have a bike in the same vintage as myself. I’m new to the mechanics but it’s been a really enjoyable journey thus far.
Much appreciated!

There are no rubber slow jet plugs in the VB44A or VB44C carbs, which came in the 81 & 82 CB650, CB650C, and CB650SC bikes respectively. Don't go searching for them, because they never came with these carbs in the first place.

Also, you replaced jets. Did you use genuine Keihin jets? If not, potentially prepare for an uphill battle.
