4 into 4 pipes, value?
« on: March 20, 2007, 07:57:43 PM »
My buddies bike has the original 4 into 4 pipes on his 1977 CB750K.  He seems to think this adds a great amount of value to his bike.  So instead of telling him that I did not think it was that big of a deal, I just smiled a nodded.  I remember telling a guy he was on crack for thinking he could get $300 for his air box, only to find out that he could because it was a K0.  I don't intend to make that mistake again.  ;)  So what do you think a set of 4 into 4 with no rust is worth?

Thanks, cleveland

kos are bringing about a grand for nos. A set of 77's I would think would be significantly less, but not sure how much.

Yea, I bet those K0 part rival the cost of new Harley parts.

Anyone know the going price of original 4 into 4 on a 77?

It totally depends on the condition of the exhaust(shine of the chrome, dents, rust, ect..)
I've seen sets go from $50 for junky ones to $300 for really nice used ones. In general, they are only worth what someone is willing to pay.

KO NOS run about a grand or a little more still plus shipping (personal experience), and the older bikes are worth more with original exhaust. Just the insulating washers that you need 12 of to mount them are 2 bucks a piece from Honda. Check the CMS web site. They probably still have exhaust for a 77.

I just checked online, and a new set from Honda lists for @$600 for a new 4 into 4  exhaust system.

The '76 and older list for $800 and up, depending on the year.

Despite what you may or may not see at Honda parts suppliers website, 77 amd 78 K bike exhausts went out of production a few years back. It is a difficult search to actually find a NOS set.  However, the late K bikes were made in huge numbers and there isn't a outrageous collectors market for the bikes so having a perfect restoration doesn't equate to huge money.  Another issue with these exhausts is that that they are welded completely shut and with no access to the internals.  I have seen a number of very nice looking sets that have the internal baffling bits rattling inside!.  No way to fix them without cutting them open and spoiling the chrome.

Well - Ive had that very question up for most of this week  but no one would answer me...

So  Thanks for answering my question to my post.. ( in a round-about-way)   I have a 77 750K with a terrible rattle.

Looked ALL OVER cmsnl and I didn't find ANY HM405 exhausts.

The HM405 exhausts are out of production AFAIK, and they are quite nearly unobtainable now.  I presume that a perfect set with no rattles would add substantially to the value of a bike, assuming everything else was in showroom condition.

There was a pretty tidy set for a '78 550K on ebay as four separate lots not long ago the cheapest went for around £85, and the most expensive went for just over £125, assuming the other two were evenly spaced between that gives you a total price £420 or there abots, which equates to roughly US$840 :o

Which is why, when I get my new exhaust from Benjie, the stock one is being thoroughly cleaned and dried, wrapped in a box full of silica and cotton wool, then tucked away in the loft ;D

I wouldn't get too "wrapped around the axles" about the potential value of K7/K8 pipes, nor would I compare them to K0 parts to try to work out a value, the K0 is the iconic SOHC4, and as such, will always command silly prices for parts, whereas the later models (which are obviously a lot more refined than the first model) will never be "collectable", however nice they might be.

For that reason alone, I'd rather install a good quality (that means "Mac-free") aftermarket pipe and enjoy the benefits of a lighter pipe with better ground clearance and performance characteristics. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"
