I bought aftermarket mirrors and it put me in category 1.  Clear picture no matter the speed.

They were the ones promoted with the wineglass on the tank, IIRC(?).

CB750K2, I have modern Honda part number mirrors. #4 for sure. Back in the day folks would tape coins to the back side of the mirrors to find the magic amount of added weight to dampen vibrations, then I presume add that amount of weight somehow.

I remember that from your book - I think.

The K0 came with crappy aftermarket and I replaced it with bar end mirrors.

These reports of factory mirrors performing poorly is surprising and disappointing to me, but then I notice that HondaMan tells us why they do this and what the inexpensive solution looks like. 

I've run into people before who generously share their deep and thorough and intimate understanding of a particular machine.  At times I have declined to act on their advice and usually regretted it.  Today, when these people talk, I listen carefully.

I'm not talking about those in the mirrors...just all of 'em...

I still have the factory mirrors on mine, they are pretty good when I re-glue the mirrors to the frames: about every 10 years or so the rubber insert that holds the mirrors shrinks (some more) and then they start shaking and vibrating, so I have to glue them down.

My 550 mirrors are a little shaky -- how does one go about doing this? Use a pick tom pull out the rubber around the mirror?

If they are loose you can use rubber cement, Walther's GOO (if you're a model-building hobbyist), or Pliobond: squeeze it in those opens spaces around the rubber edges. It keeps the water out, too.

Mark, do you put the goo in around the edge (between the glass and mirror frame)?

Mark, do you put the goo in around the edge (between the glass and mirror frame)?

Well, yes and no: the first time I did it the rubber had pulled away pretty evenly around the frame. That was in 1981 or so. The last time I did it was in 2006, and the rubber on one of them had a crack in it that let some rubber spring out toward the frame and some stayed by the glass. So that time I just filled in the gaps. Now one of them has some new gaps along the lower side and the other is opening near the top: I'll just squeegee some of this GOO into those cracks to close them fully up again.

The nice thing about the Walthers GOO is it's grip, and lack thereof: it is a mixture of Pliobond and rubber cement (judging from the smell of it) that is 100% waterproof when dried, plus being 99% sun-proof after 2-3 days. It is the parking outside at work that always breaks it down, in the direct (and very fierce) Colorado hi-altitude sun that eventually hardens it enough to crack. It stays fully flexible forever, so it is a perfect glass-holding glue.

I’m surprised PeWe hasn’t piped in. He has a great set of mirrors on his K5 and a few years ago I bought a set for a K4 I was riding at the time. I think they came from Z1? PeWe?
