How can I quiet these pipes?
« on: September 05, 2024, 12:57:15 PM »
I have Jardine 4 into 2 pipes and they are awful.  I would like to buy the OEM style pipes but that is going to total approsimately $1,800.  Is there something I can do to these to quiet them down?  They look and sound awful.

I don't know of any specific bolt-on solutions, but you might be able to have a local exhaust shop fab up a pair of 2-into-1 collectors that can take slip-on mufflers with actual baffling inside.

Back when cans were made of tin, we used to buy a vending machine can of V8 juice, make about 6 holes with a can opener in each end and secure it inside the pipe with a screw. That was the right size for a Hooker header.
That's the idea, there may be a modern analog item or measure the ID and search google for motorcycle exhaust baffles.
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.

You can buy glass pack inserts that slip in and retain with a set screw or even a self tapper,  Trick is just sourcing the right size or creating shim adapters.

We used to mimic the old Snuff-R-Not method in pipes like those: it is a large washer with a small bolt or screw (with threads standing out from the washer) welded onto one side, then a hole drilled into the side/end of the pipe where the threads could be stuck thru and a nut or (washers+nut) contrived to hold it there. It could then be set completely 'closed' for the quietest operation, or angled slightly (often downward) to relieve backpressure at high speeds if the carbs protested. I don't remember ever HAVING the carbs protest, but some riders of smaller bikes with the Snuff-R-Nots said they did at very high RPM if fully 'closed'.

If you’ll permit a bit of a sidebar: sounding “loud” while maybe not the stock sound, could actually be of benefit. Unless they drone along while steady on the throttle, a more audible exhaust is a safety feature. Humans hear things they can’t see, and look to locate the source of unexpected sounds. This might contribute to you being discovered or noticed when otherwise a driver would have looked past you, never looked for you, or ignored you completely.

I’m not advocating straight pipe Harley blasting, but something more throaty than our stock sewing machine hum is a safety aspect.

Food for thought.

Trouble is, most of that noise is directed out the rear and the danger is in front of you. Has to be darned loud to compete with some car stereos too.  :)

That is a misnomer. Next time you’re in traffic, tell me you don’t hear a raging car or truck or bike with loud exhaust approaching you from behind. They too have rear facing exhausts and you hear them quite fine.

Cal, not really. With air con, windows closed, modern sound insulated vehicles, much more isolated. My hearing is fine. In traffic I notice motorbikes at decision-making distances away, from their headlights and movement, not exhaust.

I don't mind fruity exhaust notes. I've added a few on bikes, but doubt they do anything for safety. It's a regular debate. Just my opinion.
