Man Cup race this weekend. Montgomery Alabama
« on: July 11, 2024, 10:06:15 am »
Its time for the next event in the Manufacturers Cup series this weekend at Montgomery International Dragway.  The current plan for me is to enter street ET with the Honda, 5.60 index with my small tire Kawasaki and  pro ET with the car tire Ugly Duckling drag bike.

I'm in the process of doing maintenance to the. F3 and decided to pull the clutches for inspection.  My 60 foot times have fallen and and it's causing some inconsistent ETs. As i looked through the clutch pack one by one, the problem showed itself in the last 3 steels and final 2 fibers. Yeap,  burnt and worn.  I shouldn't be surprised. After setting the initial record in Super Eliminator and then resetting it several more times, these babies are worn out from 10 years of hard launches. Its hard to be mad with these OaeM parts. They've served me well.  A new pack will go in tonight and hopefully I'll see an improvement in the overall performance of the clutch in Alabama.

I'm not certain who'll be there with an SOHC in competition, but if any forum members are near by, please come hangout with u. I'll try to post update throughout the weekend.

Frank, stay safe and have fun. Glad you have found your clutch issue and have a remedy. Hopefully the replacement parts will restore consistent operation and you can stay within your dial in and your reaction is back to a consistent number range. You guys enjoy the racing and hopefully you will have some friends to hang out with and enjoy time with after racing & wrenching is over. Safe travels...

OEM Honda all the way. I always do my best to install OEM in all my bikes regardless to the make/ model. They just seem to work better and last longer. I've used OEM in this bike from the day i built it to race.

Thats what I thought I heard you say, perhaps on a you tube walk around video identifying all the goodies on one of your Honda’s..  Been awhile since the you tube video, just checking to make sure..👍

So, how did Sunday's racing go? You mentioned you broke out early in 2nd round with your bike's new clutch pack causing some issues getting used to it. How did the other bikes run?

The race went well, very low turnout though. It was brutally HOT! Turnout was low enough that they were able to run the entire event on Saturday. My airshifter is inconsistent, it will shift flawlessly on one pass but then I will get missed shifts on subsequent passes. It may be slipping out of gear so I guess it's time to bite the bullet and do the undercut trans to see if that will correct the problem.

They ran some extra qualifying rounds in the afternoon to push the elimination rounds into the cooler evening. Eliminations went smoothly with the track personnel keeping things moving right along. The Montgomery track is a nice facility.

^Everything that Wilbur said^. I'll just add Hotttttt one more time so you can get the picture.. 🥵.

I entered pro ET on my Ugly Duckling Kawasaki dragbike and street ET on the Honda.  The new clutch pack worked so well I  couldn't get my launch together until later in the evening.  I lost 2nd round due to a breakout pass. I finally got my clutch hand in sych with the bike and knew i was likely too quick. I looked back and was out front at least 3 bike lengths approaching the stripe. I rolled out of rhe throttle and gently grabbed the rear brake to scrub ET. Unfortunately his win light came on as i noticed i ran a 6.60 on my 6.61 dial in, ending my day on the CB. I came back and jumped on the Kaw for pro ET. My opponent dialed a 6.09 to my 5.98. I knew i had a decent light but was a tad surprised at the stripe when his win light came on. I looked at the scoreboard and realized my bike only ran a 6.02 on my 5.98 dial in. He was dead on. Oh well. It was a long, hot day and now it was over and time to pack up the trailer.

Next event for Wilbur and I will be at Carolina Dragway, then Darlington Dragway and wrapping up at South Georgia Motorsports Park in November. Its looking like this could be the last year for the Man Cup series under current ownership.  He's done everything a racer could ask for but the participation is simply not there to support the series moving forward. I've got a strong suspicion he's being undermined by someone waiting in the wings to take it over. We shall see how it plays out. In the meantime we will continue to show up in continuous support for the series.

Good job Wilbur on the points standings.  Looks like i moved up in Pro ET and street ET.  Hopefully we both will improve at the next 3 events to finish in the top 5. 2 of those events will be at "home" tracks for me but that doesn't necessarily give me an automatic advantage, just less travel time🤣😂.   Nevertheless,  I need to get myself together and concentrate on making rounds  instead of just showing up to "donate".

Congrats on the standings guys!
Sound like you need some practice days to get that clutch dialed in with your launch to recalibrate the brain and reflexes...

Best wishes as you wind up the racing season and maintain some momentum to finish strong!

Now i know why my bike fell off in pro ET.  It uncharacteristically shutoff right at the stripe. While i didn't take time to check it out when we returned the the pit area, i rolled it out of the trailer last night for a quick look. I tried to rotate the crank with an adjustable wrench but felt resistance. I pulled the valve cover thinking one of the cams slipped but all was good up top. I drained the oil and saw metal in the drain pan. I removed the oil pan itself and found the dreaded copper colored shards. Dang it. I then removed the head and the cylinder for further investigation.  The #1 rod moved freely on the crank but i could barely get #2 to budge. Crap, a seized needle bearing on the roller bearing crankshaft.  Thankfully nothing is torn up. I'll remove the bottom end tonight and split the cases to begin the process of replacing the crank.  Its an early Z1 900 crank but i think i have another stock crank in my stash. It just needs to be checked with an index rod and welded before it goes in. I'll freshen up the entire engine while its apart with new rings, new cam chain and a valve job with new springs. At least i know where that 6 hundredths went off my dial in.

I pulled the engine out last night. I also hit pay dirt and found a nice crankshaft in my parts stash. Its  Z1 crank. My index rod slid right through all of the connecting rods with no problem so its not twisted and can be welded as it sits. Hopefully everything will come back together in about 14 days.
