Wiring Mess
« on: July 19, 2024, 12:46:00 PM »
project bike: 1976 CB550K

PO decided to do some rewiring which is kind of a mess so I'm pretty much starting over. I have a couple of different schematics, one Haynes and one Clymer and one I downloaded from this site. The headlight works in both low and high beam so that's a start. Next is the turn signal  First thing, the turn signal flasher I have is a 2 blade. The schematics show 3 wires, Gray, Green, and Black. Is the flasher relay 2 or 3 blade? If its 2, then where does the green wire attach since that's the ground and the holder is isolated rubber? Thanks.

My '76 is 2 blade, using grey and black. Appears looking at the schematics in the honda manual that green is not connected to anything.

3 wire flasher is for other markets US only use 2 wire and green is not connected BUT you need the correct wattage bulbs or the flash rate wont be right.
Same as there is a plain brown unconnected wire in the headlamp for a front park light in different countries and for some reason the US got a sealed beam instead of a replacable bulb.
You  also have running light in front blinkers which is only US and headlight on all the time powered via the start button.
Haynes takes no account of US models and Clymer is owned by Haynes.
On the UK site you can download the Honda manual for the 500 with all the supplements for the 550 models

OK Thanks. Next question, how do I test the flasher to see if it's any good? And will the signals work if there are no dash lights? I wondered why none of the dash was lighting up, when i took it off there are no lights. So I'm looking for a set of dash lights on ebay at the moment. Does anyone have a basic necessity schematic for these bikes? Just the basic wiring to put it on the road? This CB has after market signals, I don't think they are LEDs. I've had LEDs before and wired up a relay that actually worked with these old bikes. Anyway just trying to get the signals working at the moment. Thanks again, very priceless info!

Duanob, you're lucky. There is only ONE wiring diagram for your model (CB550K2), as it was marketed in the US exclusively. It's in page 172 https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/chxwmrwu7hk90h3cju1jc/Honda-CB500_CB550-Four-Service-Manual-Ammended.pdf?rlkey=nannxqqgvyfelf0d0rp3z92sc&e=1&dl=0

Do you happen to have the Owner's Manual for your model?

Aha! I had a bad turn relay. Went down to my local auto parts store and bought a cheap 2 prong relay and voila! they work. Still have some wiring to do but it's coming along.
