Prep before painting early 750 diecast engine cases?
« on: July 20, 2024, 01:33:40 PM »
Hi everyone  :  I’m not a painter & have cleaned with soap & water. I have the duplicolor paint/primer & wondering what easily available product to wipe them down before spraying?

After cleaning & degreasing I wipe them them down with acetone.
It will remove any final residue.

I take them to the machine shop and have them run it (bolted together, bearings all removed) thru their parts washing machines. This removes all the old paint as well as all the grease & grit, and comes back to me ready for primer.

Thanks everyone, I do have some acetone on hand so maybe I’ll use that.😀

Well I got the upper half all primed & the lower all masked-ready for primer tomorrow.

After asking questions of RKI over the years I discovered that acetone is not as "perfect" a cleaner as some might think. It might be a good step in the process but Isopropyl alcohol is superior to acetone actually. The RKI said that acetone is good at removing a few stubborn "organic esters" if I remember the term correctly. I remembered a Chemistry teacher having us rinse test tubes with acetone but I think the reason was that it did not leave any residue. We use acetone at work to clean equipment used to make a paste that is the raw material for heat cured "fiberglass"...we even have a machine to distill it in order to clean it to be re used.
