About to mount a stator cover on the 550F. I have a repro cover and have bought the oem "push fixes" that the pins mount into. dumb question maybe, but will these hold sufficiently? Anyone use anything else to make sure they stay put?

Obvious issues: heat making glue not hold, removing the cover down the road... but I'm also not interested in watching this $100 cover drop off and roll down the road...

Just checked F1 has seperate emblem F2 had name in cover.
The seperate emblem started with 500 and went all the way through till the name in cover, yes occasionaly they fell off but usually only after people tried to use a mix of new and used, bent, bits

It the clips rust until they no longer grip and then you loose the cover.

You could cut a really thin slot in the ends of the pins, fit and then spread the slot slightly from the inside, you can see and get to the pins from the inside.

Seems like some work -- I don't want to take off the whole stator cover and I'd be worried about splitting the pins since they're too small...

Maybe just a dab of epoxy?

The problem with glue is if you ever want to remove the cover in the future. Say if the field coil burnt out or the screws came loose.

If that happens the only way you’ll get it off without bending or damaging it is to knock the pins through from the inside a little at a time.

Maybe some Blue Loctite.

I actually took the push fixes out of the package and had a look, put them on the cover, and noticed they've got a little bit that protrudes that should lock it in there pretty tight. Forgive me for doubting Honda's engineers. a couple raps with a rubber mallet with a piece of cloth over it, and that thing is tighter than a... well, it's in there pretty good. I'll keep my eyes on it and if it starts to look like it's coming loose I can always take it off and put some adhesive in there. Seems like I was overthinking it -- although the original cover did come off at some point and there was a little evidence of epoxy on there...

Anyway, thanks all for chiming in.

Mine never fell off even with only two good pins but I had to put a dab of glue when I can no longer stand the rattling.

I used rubber glue. I think it was E6000 or something similar I had laying around that I'd used for repairing speaker foam surrounds. The glue stretches so the cover can still be taken off when needed.

Does anyone else remember the famous 1st ride review of the CB500 SOHC4 by Cycle Magazine?
The "HONDA" cover fell of the alternator cover, and they showed it...

When I decided to just tap it in as is, I was thinking "There's no way the Honda guys who F this up because it's the name of the company right on the side..."

Since this is pretty current, I thought I would ask . . .

Re 1975 CB550F.  The Honda emblem on my stator cover is rashed up, and I would like to replace it.

Do you have to remove the stator cover to do this?   Can someone who has done this before please give me a thumbnail of the on and off procedure?

Thanks!

Nope. According to the parts fiche it's the same as the 1976. The cover has three pins that are pressed into three holes that have the "push fixes" in them. To take it off, you've got to get behind it and pry it. IF it's damaged and you're replacing and don't care, you should be able to rip it off without much care. I imagine you'd have to be careful if you were trying to keep it intact.

I got my replacement from CMS in the Netherlands. But make sure you get new push fixes as well, still available from Honda I think (I got mine from DSS).

Here's the diagram to have a look:

Brian you could try and repair the existing badge. I have mirror polished my rotor cover, to fit an unpolished rotor cover badge would I thought look out of place. Rather stupidly I sold my old rotor badge as it has a very small mark on it and bought a brand new one instead. Only after I sold it did I think of the clash of colours etc so I found a damaged rotor badge and thought I'd see how good I could make that, as an experiment if nothing else.

I started with this

As you can see it's pretty damaged, large dent near the made in japan section and some road rash as well. It's usable if your not concerned with how it looks.

After trying a little panel beating, I bought a leather bag filled with lead beads to do that on and cleaning up the road rash it looked like this.

Now all I had to do was polish it and fill in the missing black paint, I decided to go a little further than Honda originally did TBH but that's just a personal preference of mine. I smudged the paint at the bottom a little and hadn't fixed it by the time I'd taken the pic, just needs a little filling in with more paint. Now it looks like this.

I probably won't fit it to my bike, it was just to see if I could do it and also to see the best way to do the new one if I decide to go that way.

As for removal, if you try and remove the cover on the bike you almost certainly bend the cover, as CC says, not a problem IF your replacing it anyway but the best way is to remove the rotor cover and you'll see the ends of the 3 pegs which hold it in place inside the cover, just tap them out a little at a time, do one peg a little, then another and then the last and so on. Hitting one peg all the way out can break the peg and distort the cover. Doing it this way also makes it easy to remove the clips if they stay inside the holes, which they often do.

I agree with Carnivorous.  That is really nice work.  I lack that kind of talent, so decided to buy a new emblem plate from CMSNL since they still are available.

Thank you for the warning about mangling it in the removal.  I try to save every part, so good to know that this may be a goner no matter what.

One more question for Oddjob.  It sounds like you are recommending removing the entire stator cover and removing the old emblem plate by tapping it out from behind.  Correct?

Thanks.

Mine (CB500) fell off. I never have had it of myself, so vibes can cause this. If any of you has a spare used one, for a reasonable price, please, let me know. Some marks is not an objection.
