Solutions for nuts, bolts, screws, springs etc?
« on: July 26, 2024, 12:10:42 PM »
These all don’t have the same finish(zinc?) do they? Some bright, some not…I forget 🙃
I see via google that there are some zinc plating companies in my area.

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of it's victim may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S. Lewis

Oh thanks👍 I was wondering about the plating processes, iirc it was clear chromate or something?
A friend mentioned he used a rattle can zinc so I’m not sure but I like the replating over painting any day lol
I don’t remember those 2 lower engine mount bolt & rod w/footpegs or the rear footpeg bolts ever being shiny…?

If it works good, it looks good...

I've done some zinc plating DIY with a dip in chromate. It can come out ok with a little practice.

Original hardware was probably cadmium plated, but now hard and very expensive to get done. I have a connection at a commercial zinc plater, who can do it in either a bluish tint or goldish tint. I take about half a Home Depot bucket's worth at a time, and he does it for less than $150.

And it is A LOT of hardware - axles, spacers, exhaust split collars, brake rods and brake shoe cams, brake anchor arm, even tool kit tools and rear footpegs (complete with the rubber - it doesn't affect it).  I've tossed all my old hardware in and they come back looking new, saving me hundreds over the years.
