Exhaust Bolt Repair - Helicoil or Time Sert?
« on: July 30, 2024, 01:44:47 PM »
One exhaust bolt hole doesn't grab anymore, thinking of replacing bolts with studs but first will repair the damaged threads.

Got a time sert kit ($$$) but not that I look at the space there might not be enough 'meat' in the head for these.  Anyone try this?  What did you use and would you do it again or change?

Helicoil is ok if you fit studs
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Just repaired an exhaust stud hole in my CB500 with a helicoil and it worked fine.

A CB750 head I have got a bad exhaust bolt thread.
I did not order a Wurth time-sert for M8, too expensive for one thread. I have 2 sets for M6, 1st and 2nd size.

I let my local shop install a thread insert.

I have after that used a cheap helicoil set for M8 in another CB750 head's exhaust bolt thread. I do not remember which head.

I have a Hindle 4-2-1 with spigots fastened in the head so removing the pipes does not need untighten those bolts.
