Anyone know much about the Suzuki GS1100??
« on: March 31, 2007, 09:27:20 AM »
As i mentioned in Bills clutch rod thread im considering the purchase of a 1982 Suzuki GS1100GK Touring edition as a touring bike or drag bike project. As comfortable as my VF is for long rides im sure i would start to get sore and tired after a ride longer then 2 hours or so. This is why im considering the GS as a long distance machine and keeping the CB and the VF for in town and short out of town rides. Does anyone know much about this model. I understand the GK is the touring bike much like a goldwing but other then that im not sure on the machine. The fact its an 1100 alone is kinda daunting.

Heres the only pic of the bike in question that i have.

Change oil and filter, check tappets, ride.
Come back in another 30 yrs for further instructions.
don't remember any real issues with 1000 or 1100?
Cam bearings can seize if someone has been cheap about cam cover gasket and used too much sealer ( you have to use small amount around ends)
clutch will probably explode if you drag race it without some modification's, same for second gear.( but you can fit later model or after market parts)
Still a lot of stuff available for them including 1700cc big block conversion (although thats about $5,500, 300bhp tourer? ;D ;D)

Buy it and enjoy it.  That looks like a hella nice ride.  The early Suzuki 1100's were hella strong.  No worries.  Of course you can always cafe that bike into one evil bastard!

Used to have an '83 GS100E. I started to breathe hard a lot sooner than that thing ever did...

Try thegsresources.com.
All the G models are shaft drive, by the way.
If it's worth doing at all it's worth over-doing.

I think im going to have to take a look at this thing in person. I suspect though if i do buy it...dont be suprised if it suddenly looses some serious weight in the form of the faring and bags....I see a cafe racer hidden in that beast that wants to come out and play....That is of course if i dont wind up finding a VF750 based streetfighter on my hands...My roomate had a parts bike offered to him just after he bought a twin to my VF. His is an 84 mines an 85. Theres some differences between the two mainly in the form of all the trim that is black on mine is chrome on his. and it also has a top end oiler mod. Eventually mine will be recieving one as well..but for now it will be getting an oil change soon..probably by the end of the month if all goes well...

I toccasional talk with a guy who LOVES those.  I suspect it might be a tad big/heavy for a cafe treatment, though.
But- maybe not...
