American Land Master UTV.
« on: August 02, 2024, 06:54:46 PM »
Stumbled on one for sale locally; 2016 LM650 powered by a 650cc, twin cylinder Subaru! 4x4, utility box on the back. Full roll cage with seat belts. Winch on the front and 2” receiver on the back……

These are actually Made in America and seem to have a following. Nobody here knows about them, and only one dealer in Ontario. I need a replacement for the golf cart we use around the farm, and I’m tempted. I like it, because it’s small. Anybody have one?? Comments??

Back in 2023 I bought a used 2022 American Landmaster L7X 4X4. It was a rental with low hours that had been turned back in from the Toyota battery plant a big construction site in my area. They had got rid of all the gas powered utv's to go with a all diesel fleet. I've got some acreage and I had been wanted to get something to use on the property. I had read about ALM and they got a lot of positive review and best of all they are made and assembled in the USA with mostly American parts. I had priced a brand new one and it was going to be $18 grand :o, way more than what I wanted to spend. So I went with the used one for $10 grand out the door. I've put more than 100 hrs on it so far and in 4wd it will go just about anywhere. It is a little more noise and loud than I like but still far more pros than cons. It's belt driving and has a Kohler 694cc twin cylinder engine that puts out 20 some horses and has a top speed of 34 mph.

Thanks! Nice to hear about a positive experience.

I crawled around it a bit already and am impressed by the build and parts quality. I also like that it’s not as massive as some of the other brands. Both rear fenders are cracked so I went on the manufacturers website to have a look. $22 each and $18 postage. Went ahead and ordered, to see what their service is like. I picked it up for less than US$3K so not much of an investment!

Bill….. the fellow had a new JD Gator and I think he just wanted this one gone. I’ll know more in a few months, but I’m pretty pleased. Cleaned the plugs and reset the idle this morning. It had a “rattle” that was just the spark arrester loose on the end of the muffler. Banged out the air filter and washed the foam sock, all in good condition. The hand brake improved with a small adjustment on the cables.

I wish I hadn’t ordered the rear fenders. They are held to the underside of load box with two washers and nylock nuts. Flipped them around the other way and the cracks and breaks disappeared! Front discs both look a little crusty, will pull a wheel off and have a look soon. Otherwise, everything seems to work very well

Previous owner called me this am, on his wife’s instructions. She was annoyed with him for not telling me the UTV’s name is “Ruby”. I don’t usually name vehicles, but now it’s in my head, it will probably stick!

Well….. “Ruby” bangs and farts a bit after a longer, wide open run. I pulled the carb hose off the vacuum pump and it seemed to be “pulsing” fuel, but not that much. Changed the inline filter, but the old one looked OK. While I had it off, decided to drain off the old fuel (PO has a new JD Gator, so this one has been parked a while). Stuck the  open hose in a can, dropped below the tank. Not much flow. Turns out the hose nipple pushes through a grommet in the plastic tank. It’s down in a shallow sump that was filled with a mix of dead bugs and who knows what else. Carefully pulled it out and was able to clean the area. Gas now pours out the hose at a good rate and the pump shoots fuel across the engine compartment! Test drive tomorrow..

Bill….. It worked fine all day.

I was thinking I might pull that bottom fitting out again and add a 2” copper “straw” to ensure it never pulls anything from the bottom of the tank. Or, I could just leave it alone!

Does it run stronger up the top-end now John ?

Today I took a break from the bike and played around with the Landmaster LM650. Changed the engine oil and filter (Honda GN4 10W-40), topped up the rear diff (straight SAE30W motor oil), and cleaned out both rear drums and reset the hand brake cable lengths so they work. Very impressed with the build quality and excellent hardware I found everywhere.

Pulled up the centre console to get to the brake cables and ended up cleaning and lubricating all the pivots and rod ends for brake and throttle pedal. The machine has an excellent set of headlamps with built in orange side markers, but no tail light! Built a bracket and hung an old trailer marker light at the back. The new rear fenders arrived ($19 each plus $18 shipping seemed VERY reasonable!) and got bolted on in a few seconds. The manufacturer and UPS had them here in less than a week!

The transfer case uses  any standard  80W90 diff oil, but the front diff calls for a small amount of “Mobil Fluid 424”. The manual is adamant to use only the Mobil product. Can’t seem to find any here in less than a 5 gallon pail!! Anyone know a source for smaller quantities?

The PO had the winch toggle switch mounted on a horrible, sharp edged bracket on the driver’s side “door post” (there is no door).  My wife commented on it immediately. Perfect for gouging your knee when getting in and out. I pulled the glove box and relocated the switch to the underside of the dash, just below it (the bracket is gone). Stuck in one of our extra garage door openers too. Found an old wide angle mirror, that came out of a race car a few years ago, and bolted  it to the front of the roof. “Happy Wife, Happy Life”.

Next up will be a check over of the tiny front calipers and a DOT3 fluid change. I really like this thing and fiddling with something different is fun.
