Thoughts on 550/650 Cam swap TACH situation
« on: August 08, 2024, 09:02:14 AM »
I may have asked this to you all a couple years ago, but I just wanted to make sure. The 650 cam is now in my 550 and the motor is installed. Not quite finished yet. I do have the 650 tach DRIVE in there, but the cable still goes up to my 550 tach. I haven't figured out exactly what I'm going to do yet with the tach. As for now, the stock tach sits.

I've seen people who do this mod either put a 750 tach in, or just run without a tach. Why doesn't anyone do what I'm doing and just leave the 550 tach in? It definitely won't be accurate, but to my understanding, inaccuracy will be the worst of it...it's not like it's going to damage or destroy the 550 tach right????? It'll just be inaccurate???

An inaccurate rev counter is useless, take it off or fix the issue

Use an appropriate strobe to remark the glass with correct revs

As long as you know how much it is off by, it should be fine. If it buries the needle every time, it might not be good for it long term.

THere was soneone who made replacement decals that were very nicely done. He offered a replacement decal for the 550 tach that showed the correct range for a 650 cam.  I know it's not helpful without a link, so I'll look for it.
