spitfire annoys plasterer
« on: March 19, 2007, 08:06:48 PM »
nice afternoon and I'm just putting the final prep to my cafe seat and I get buzzed by some guy in his spitfire, love the sound of that plane. How is a man meant to concentrate with that beauty flying around ?

Something about the sound of a Merlin.

Well any V-12 even the Allison.

Well any large radial too. I have way too much time behind R1830's (14 cylinder) and R2800's (18 cylinders)

I still look up when one fly's over.

one guy used to do straffing runs over a place I used to camp at, you wouldn't know which direction he was going to come from as the hills hid the sound until he'd come screaming along in the spitfire. then to surprise you he might come back in his mustang, horn material  ;D

When I was an air cadet in England I was lucky enough to be able to sit in the cockpit of one of the Battle of Britain Flight's Spitfires. Sheer bliss.

Agreed.  As pleasureable and awesome as that is, however, hearing one go by at 50 ft and making 3000 (or more) HP is nearly a religious experience.
Nirvana is when 2 or three go by, along with a R-3350 (18 Cyl, 3500HP) and R-4360 (28 Cyl, 4000HP), all making near max power.

My mouth gets dry simply remembering the experience.

 8) ;D

Just remember that after you've got that little lot set up, you're still only half way through the job :o

Many years ago, the mechanic who taught me all I know about tinkering with cars had a complete and functional (but prop-less) Merlin out of a Lancaster in the back of his workshop ;D
I used to spend most evenings and Saturday mornings there just looking at it. I was only in my early teens then, as you can imagine it left a bit of an impression 8)

Love the old warbirds best but 20 yrs ago working out in the new maintenance building at the C/S airport a B-1 did a few touch and goes.  The building was shaking and everybody was out watching.

Now picture doing that on a R2800 (18 cylinders) or an R4360 (28 cylinders). Least half the cylinders are angled down to some degree.

Saturday, a P-51 flew by as I was spreading mulch.  There is also a B-24, a P47, and a TBf near here that go by occaisionally.  Love to watch them.

I am told that TBO on a Merlin is around one hundred hours, and the overhaul costs around $80,000.  The guys that fly those P-51's a lot have one in the plane and on ready to go in the plane.  Jack Roush (the NASCAR one) is using his resources and interest in P-51's (he has two) to manufacture new parts giving the engines much better reliability and longer TBO's.

That was certainly true in the military in regard to TBO.

Bear in mind that the V-1650 (the merlin) was used in commercial aviation as well as the 600 / 700 series.

TBO was rather longer than 100 hrs.

There were slightly over 150,000 built. (Rolls Royce, Packard, etc)

Several years ago, went to Titusville air show during a trip to Daytona bike week. Had 14 (fourteen) p51s sitting in a row, all running. 168 cylinders! Wha a SYMPHONY.

I think the short TBO mainly concerned the ones with the Packard internals, there was an article about Jack Roush in Warbird Digest a year or two ago.

I think the short TBO mainly concerned the ones with the Packard internals, there was an article about Jack Roush in Warbird Digest a year or two ago.

The short life span is often associated with overhauls with military components to service limits. Short life is also to be expected with military power settings.

Also, Rolls Royce over the years approved many methods and alterations to extend the service life of parts. Often to the detriment of longetivity.

The last varients produciing 1500 - 1900 hp obviously do not last as long as the earlier lower hp models.

The two speed supercharged ones in particular.

Thats often the case as power output increases with an engine.

I haven't seen it personally with the V-1650 but I have seen it with the R1820 Wright. Was a good engine in the 850 - 1200 hp range. Reliability was abysmal in the 1450 - 1550 range (Super DC-3, S2, T-28C, etc)

i really don't care much about the plane but, you're building a seat out of plaster???

do you mean fiberglass or plaster?  maybe you're building a mold or something...

sincerely,

cheers for your concern heffay
long story short: after trying to find the seat that would match the "look" I was after, paulages build inspired me to make my own. thru a combination of bad planning, ignorance and just a tad too much alcohol I have arrived at what I intended, unfortunately a wee bit rough round the edges if you know what I mean. thus the plaster or to be more precise polyester filler.
apply filler..wait..sand..apply 3D primer..wait..sand..apply less filler..wait..sand..blah blah blah
actually it is turning out better than I hoped, just would of helped if I knew what I was doing  ;D
