Does anyone sell a giant hardware kit for these old bikes?
« on: August 11, 2024, 07:46:41 AM »
My project CB550F is missing a lot of it's original hardware and a lot of the hardware it does have is cheap Home Depot junk that doesn't belong on the bike.

When going through the bike I am constantly needing hardware.

Also wouldn't mind getting rid of a lot of the JIS bolts in favor of hex.

I have found kits for the motors specifically but does anyone make a high quality hardware kit for therest of the bike?

Or perhaps is there a good online source you guys use for high quality autmotive grade plated/stainless motorcycle hardware?

I need a lot of hardware... and would rather not buy it one piece at a time. Moreso to save time than costs so I can keep chipping away at the bike without interruptions.

Nobody to my knowledge makes the kit you want BUT be carefull what you buy as Honda used non standard size hexagon heads and the non standard thread in a lot of places.
Cmsnl will give you part numbers and in a lot of cases you can work out sizes from the part numbe

I have bought bolt kits from various sources. Engine kits are pretty common.
And for the most part the kits are a pretty fair deal.

Hex heads are fine for a lot of applications, just be careful not to over torque them.
For the rest of the bike I go through the parts list.
Along with the part number it usually lists the size of the bolts and types of washers etc.
Then I make up a list and go to a bolt supply house that's local to me.
They'll sell me just the bolts I need rather than ordering online where you usually have to buy a whole box.

Some of the Honda bolts are non-standard lengths and you might have to buy them longer and cut them back.
If you need a PDF of the parts list check out the link in my sig.

I bought a couple of engine bolt kits from this place: https://alloyboltz.com/
McMaster-Carr is another good source.

I like the JIS crossheads. They are so much better than Philips crossheads. OK, I have replaced those that fasten the carb bowls by allen for convenience (pic), but for the rest, no problem. And they have the right alloy so no electrolysis. Have SS allen bolts and expect threads damage when they're in the wet often. Just use JIS screwdrivers only and if you don't have them, stick to those in the Honda toolbag under the seat. They are JIS. For some crossheads an impactdriver can be handy.

69cb750 you hit the nail on the head.

Don't know why I didn't think of that. And I always see those used oem hardware lots when searching for parts. I remember I used to think who the hell buys those, lol.

I'm going to buy a few of those oem used hardware lots from the guys who part these bikes out on ebay, and use the Honda catalog as reference for when I need a bolt/nut/washer.

One day when and if I do a frame up rebuild I'll replate all the hardware. I'd rather do ugly used OEM hardware than new low grade crap.

CycleRanger that's what I usually do, but this bike needs A LOT of hardware, and it would take forever to get through the project if I don't have a bucket of spare hardware on hand.

Deltarider, I didn't think the steel/aluminum corrosion issue was really a problem with these bikes because I always read/see people using stainless hardware with these bikes. I hate that issue, and do ride rain or shine. So don't think I'm going to use stainless in that case unless I absoltely have to in a critical location, like you did on the carb bowls, I can't see doing it any other way now for the bowls.

Thread very success! Thanks guys, especially 69cb750.

Lots of parts will cost.
I have bought screws and bolts from yamia750.com in various sizes.

I know people that restored bolts and screws, new shiny surface. Rechrome fenders and rims too.

I forgot, I bought one of those piles of fasteners one time off ebay years back because there were a couple of small brackets I needed in the pile.
Yes, it was a pretty good deal.
I got what I needed and sorted the rest.

Bought this lot for now, should keep my busy for a bit. Eyeing a few other sets to round off my spare hardware bucket but I bought some other 550 parts off the seller also, think I spent enough for one day. Decent bang for buck on this lot.

Whether you use stainless or carbon steel bolts in aluminum cases, galvanic corrosion still occurs. You simply need to use a light coating of Zinc Antisieze (gray formula) on the threads.

Before you start replacing the hardware, do yourself a huge favor and buy a decent tap and die set. Chase all the case holes with an oiled tap, and then run a die over the bolt threads. A quick shot of brake clean over the threads and in the hole, then a light film of antisieze. You’ll be much better off.

For 6mm bolts (and there’s tons of them) just nip the bolts hand tight lest you tear out the threads or shear the bolt.

You can buy new, high quality bolts, nuts and washers online from boltdepot.com, allensfasteners.com, even McMasterCarr. If you look online at the parts fiche, each bolt is listed per section with dimensions and quantity needed. The only odd thread pitch I can think of your bike is the caliper mounting bolt and that’s 10x1.0 pitch (super fine). Everything else is industry standard to my recollection.

A friend (in this case, true) cracked a bracket after cleaning out the thread in a blind hole. He thinks he'd left some cleaning fluid in the hole and the hydraulic pressure cracked the casing as he tightened the bolt. I suppose it's possible. Anyhow, I now use an airline to blow out any residue.

I use partzilla they have exploded views and supply every OEM honda part available it's great to find original honda chromed unmarked head bolts used all over our bikes

https://www.partzilla.com/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=paid&utm_campaign=172523493&utm_content=9167084253&utm_term=partzilla&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjw5ea1BhC6ARIsAEOG5pzD7qlFh7oifLV4Mthbc4mMi0RgLXkmKSjXfUPqIObi_slaBCcnj-saAqW4EALw_wcB

It seems CMSNL has a bigger selection of genuine honda partsbut they are in the Netherlands. The shipping is flat rate so order as much as you like for about $20.0 . They also have exploded views.

https://www.cmsnl.com/

Also If you are in search of Vintage style fasteners with the correct "8" on them.as the new honda hardware has a marking with an 8 and a Dash under it.
For some reason the vintage fastener tab does not populate all the selection. They have the complete selections off 10 mm hex bolts  4mm through 40.and the like with JIS HEX screws

BTW I am visiting the UK right now . On a train from London to Edinburgh. What a great place! Not late night posting
