CB350F broken bolts on throttle linkage shaft
« on: August 22, 2024, 06:38:45 AM »
I’m a dumb dumb. After rebuilding my carbs I was prepping the body for reattaching the carbs to it, and noticed there was a broken bolt head. Like an idiot I tried to loosen the other side and it broke too.

What wisdom do you have for getting these out?

If you can get into it, file flats on opposite sides of the screw head and then grab them with a mole wrench and break them loose. Maybe penetrating oil and heat at the same time.

Does 'mole wrench' translate to the US?

One of those collars is a separate piece, I've replaced those before when they've broken the bolt, the other though is part of the butterfly, that will be harder to source IF you end up ruining it. The bolts tighten down onto a flat section on the chromed rod it's mounted on, so that when the butterfly is pulled by the cables it turns the rod. I drilled mine out and helicoiled them afterwards, just be careful of marking the rod. Rods are available in stainless if you require one, I have a couple spare but I'm in the UK. I tend to replace those bolts with stainless ones so they don't rust and break in the future.

Can’t say I know what a mole wrench is. I think the one with the stub sticking out I can get. The one in the collar body though….any thoughts on that? Drill it and reverse tap?

Maybe what is called a Vise Grip
Yes, drill it out as close to center as possible, use an Easy Out. Also soak it in some penetration oil first.

I actually dont have an easy out — time to add a new tool.

So PB Blaster + Easy Out — how about heat? Would a heat gun help in this case or make it worse?

Easy-outs are the spawn of the devil! :o After you break one off, and you will if the bolt is seized, you're screwed, as they are too hard to drill.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!
