Honda cb500 four k1 - extra clutch plate?
« on: August 21, 2024, 06:21:06 AM »
Hi everyone!!

Recently I had some gear dogs rounded and needed to change them.

I notice that my clutch had an extra clutch plate. So there was a plate between the gear and the first friction disk…
I measured the friction disks and they were fine!

I removed it and now I can’t get the clutch working properly.
Or it’s too loose and I seams that I’m forcing the gears selector, or it too tight and it seams that it’s reeving like some clutch is applied.

I know that o can reinstall it but I want to understand why since it’s not supposed to have 7 clutch plates. I think it’s suppose to have 7 friction disks and 6 plates.

Can someone help me understanding this?
I also want to be sure that installing an extra plate will not damage anything.

Cheers

What model and engine number is it, Honda did do some mods early on in the 500's life

Not sure about the version now that I’m checking.
Engine has Cb500E-21xxxx
Frame has CB500-20xxxx

That should be after any clutch mods unless a po has fitted old parts.
Check out a K0 parts book to see if it looks more like yours.
Should be a pic of K0 clutch attaced where the back of the clutch centre is a loose plate held by a big ciclip, later ones were cast in one piece

Mine is already cast in one piece.

But it had an extra plate between the plate already casted and the first friction disc.

Before I removing it, it was shifting ok (but with dogs rounded).

I think somebody previous has mixed up a manual and years and put the extra plate in by mistake

Yeah, I also think so.

But the truth is that before the shifting was working properly!

Could be any logic for adding the extra disc?

I've seen the extra steel ones installed when the aluminum ones warped and the owner could not get a new un-warped one (back plate). Then he switched plate counts steel & fiber to make the stack height come out right.

And it worked!
