Topic: Tach and Speedo Refresh Question

My cb750K1 has been much ignored lately. I have a spare, decent set of the correct speedo and tach for it. Planning to sub them in after a good refresh. Anyone ever use Randy’s Cycle Service? Other recommendations?

If someone on here wants to tackle them, I am in no rush and happy to wait!

I’ve done a few in the past and frankly was not impressed with my results. Curious what others do.

I have done some also, John, and the issue is always removing/replacing the ring without damaging it.

Surely a a man of your abilities could come up with a way to do this successfully and share it with us mortals.

Meantime, I’ve use a guy in England called Peter Horton who does an excellent job and much cheaper than others I have seen.

I responded on the thread that Stev-o gave a link to earlier. I had sent a set of K1s to Classic Bike Meters, but I didn't post any follow up photos. I have sent a second set of K1s to CBMTRS that Patrick is working on now. The first set was a shade over $600. I did check Randy's and it looked similar in cost to CBMRTS, unless I missed something. I was very satisfied with the first set and wanted to stay consistent with the second set.

There is a member on the UK forum called Peter Horton (Kent400)who is the go to guy for all the other members to get their clocks done by him. He charges very reasonable rates, $600 is an obscene amount to pay.

Peter did a set of CB550F2 clocks for me, fitted newly rezinced bottoms, the dishes were resprayed satin black and the needle damper reservoir was refilled. I can't remember what I was charged but it wasn't anywhere near $600, the clocks looked as good as new afterwards. Plenty of pictures of Peters work on the UK forum. Found the cost, less than $100 for both gauges, that was a couple of years ago now but it should still be in the ballpark so to speak. I hope Peter doesn't mind me recommending him for work, I do know he's very busy at times though.

Also found some pics. Peter had to replace my dish on the tacho and the only one he could find had a very small dent in the edge near the glass, as I'm fitting chrome covers over these it wasn't a problem.

I used Randy Creel.  Was more than pleased.  Price was $550.  I had looked at doing it myself with aftermarket faces but didn’t have the confidence that I wouldn’t destroy the backing. The cases themselves are also refinished.

Got to be honest and say that Peter Hortons work surpasses Marcels in my opinion. He’s done loads of 750K0 gauges and every single owner has raved about the quality. He even has a machine to disband and reband the gauge without damaging the band. He’s also the cheapest one around as far as I know.

Marcel still selling the parts for the work but his work was cosmetic, so no repairs. I do not include refills of the damper pot as a repair.  Given the cost of the parts it sounds like Peter Horton is by far a better turn key solution. The shipping to him will probably be greater than his return shipping costs. You might have better luck in Canada with shipping costs to GB than we do in the US as all options I am aware of are fairly costly for a package of any size and weight.

That wouldn't be hard - I can't find anything positive to say about Marcels work - he left me feeling completely ripped off!
I am glad to see some other options available if I can re-save up the money to try again!

I had a bad experience with Marcel. The first time I sent him my K0 gauges, I had them back after a year, I was not able to speak at him and he replied to my mails with a long delay. He was good only for the face plates that he produce, but as other had said, he only worked on cosmetic restoration.
After my gauges came back from him the Speedo was showing 15-20 km/h less than real speed and the trip counter worked bad so I had to ship again to be repaired but the second time I sent to TACHOWERK in Germany. He repaired even the internal speedo mechanism and finally I was able to ride with pleasure

I recently disassembled, cleaned and lubricated my 1977 CB550F speedo and tach myself. Both instruments weren’t working right. I made a cut in the bezel ring with a Dremel tool. I cleaned the mechanisms with Deoxit spray and used clock oil to lube the moving parts.

I used clear sealant on the inside of the bezel rings and used a big hose clamp to hold them in place until the sealant cured.

Both instruments are working great now.

I had an issue with my gauges that he restored, had to ship them back at my cost [$60]. But he did take care of it.

I shipped mine back to him twice at great expense - he did NOT take care of it, actually made them worse and 2nd time he shipped them back with no odometer trip meter reset knob installed!!
