1972 CB500/4 Master Cylinder holes
« on: August 25, 2024, 10:12:32 PM »
Greetings from the bottom of the world !

I'm currently working on refurbishing the front brakes, and in the bottom of the Brake Fluid
reservoir there are two holes. One of them (closest to the operating lever) is completely clear and goes
straight through into the plunger cavity below, but the other hole doesn't seem to go any where. It's like it's
blanked off, or full of something hard. Should it be going anywhere ?  Should it be clear straight through
to the pluger cavity also ?

Thanks in advance
Chris

Hi Chris. There is a teeny tiny hole down in the bottom of that hole. It's purpose is to release pressure in the brake line when the brake isn't applied. It's open at rest, and closed by the rubber cup when the brake is applied. When blocked, the brake will stay on even after the handle has been released.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

Don't look closely at it when moving the brake lever: it can squirt 1" above the brake housing when the lever is applied & released!

Chris - I'm in New Plymouth so if you need a replacement M/C I've got a few. Can't guarantee their condition so there would be no cost.
Cheers - John
