Gauge Problems

I just got my bike(75 Cb750)registered today so I was able to take it on a 45 minute ride. I was having problems before with my tach and speedo not working properly, so I ordered new cables from Dennis Kirk and put them on.

My tach is still doing what it did before. When it's in the pod it doesn't work, it just sticks around 3000rpm. If I take it out of the pod it works. I figure this is because the cable is bending. I rode it around with the tach taped ahead of the mounting point and it worked most of the time. Why wouldn't it work with the cable bent how the factory had it?

My speedo bounces around so much I can't tell how fast I'm going and sometimes it stops moving. This has a new cable also. What would cause this?

Finally, I keep hitting false neutrals when I shift and sometimes the lever clatters when I downshift. What's going on? Thanks, Jimmy.

I went and lubed the cables(completely disconnected the at both sides and squirted cable lube in until it came out the other side)and rode the bike and it still does the same thing. What else could it be? Is there any way to disassemble the tach? Thanks, Jimmy.

Thanks for the link. Hopefully that will fix the speedo. It's odd that the tach works when the cable is straighter. It should work when it's in its pod since that's how the factory designed it. If I have it out in front of the pod and move it back toward the handlebars it stops working. This suggests the cables at fault, but it's brand new and lubed?! I don't want to ride around with my tach electrical taped to the headlight anymore. I don't think chicks would dig that. Thanks, Jimmy.

It might be worth checking the tacho drive off the camshaft and the socket into the tacho! The square end of the cable fits into a square hole in the driver and if that square hole is worn the effort taken to drive the cable and tacho rises with the revs and thus could start to slip at higher revs.

Also make sure it's fully seated at the tacho drive end, with a tighter curve in the cable it could be pulling out from the drive. Disconnect from the tach and push the inner core firmly down to ensure it's fully engaging.
In the UK anything over 40 years old only needs insurance and Fuel.

Not a good idea to completely lube the cables. Leave a couple of inches at the end that goes into the instrument (speedo, tacho)
Centrifical force will suck excess lube into your instruments & you then have to have a lot of patience & beer.
