1980 cb650- chance to buy
« on: October 13, 2024, 08:26:33 AM »
I have a chance to buy a 1980 cb650. Can get it for $1500 Cad.

Here is what the gentleman sent me.

Will i just ended up with a harley sportster so been riding it. as for the honda I think I will look for a buyer. The honda had cost me 2500 but then finding it as issues and the harley came along so been having some fun with it. I will see i should have pictures here of the Honda. There is also a windsheild with the it. some of the issues. it been flooding with gas coming from overflow tubes and in the top it s got a small oil leak and although I haven't seen oil under the crank case first when I got it running and then parked there was blob of dirty oil under the cranck case directly under the front of its chain so it may have been packed with oil when the original ower had it parked for year i guess he passed and left the bike with his daughter.also it seem like i see oil in the muflers and that could be because of gas flooding (sticky valves0 it did a bunch of backfiring when I first satrted it but after giving it a run that seemed to stop . it got 34000 kls on it. also there the seals must be gone on the front forks as there is oil on the shocks. I don't know what to do with it at this time just parked it in my garage someone also painted the motor with what looks like aluimunium  hot paint . I wisjh it was up and running better but I said well park it after getting the harley .

You think this is worth getting into? He sent me pictures and the bike looks to be all original except exhaust. 34,000 kms on it and change.

I don't know Canadian dollars and too lazy to google exchange rate.  Sounds like it needs same amount of work as an older, better looking, much more desireable model that there are actual parts available for...ie, why waste time and money.  Dime where abouts do you live?
If it works good, it looks good...

OK, I see by your profile that you live in Newfoundland.  That might be the best opportunity to come up for a long while there?  I don't know.

Thanks for the opinion. So.I am.guessing the older cb650's are a better bike to pick up? Options are slim here. I am very fortunate to have gotten my 78 750.

Well, older 650's are just 500/550s.  sohc 650 only made 79-82'.  And yeah, although they have some advantages, like horsepower, I am not a fan.

Out of all the Honda SOHC/4 models, I would argue that they are the least loved with the least parts availability. The benefit of the 650s over previous models is the transistorized ignition. I'm obviously a huge fan of the Nighthawk variant, but otherwise I kind of think just about every other SOHC/4 looks better, with less of an altogether cruiser look.

Sounds like a lot to fix for $1500, especially CAD. Offer him $500 to take it away, if you want it for the challenge and have the money to tie up.
