76 vs 77 750 frame?
« on: March 20, 2007, 08:30:05 AM »
Does anyone know what, if anything, changed with the frame from 76 to 77 on the 750?  I have a buddy that has a decent 77 but getting a title for this bike has been a nightmare.  We figure we'll just get a frame with a title and swap everything over.  I have an extra 76 frame and I thought I would ask you guys before I go looking for something I may already have.

Thanks, cleveland

The 77 F frames are different from the 76 F frames. Foot peg brackets and side cover(left) are two areas I know that will not swap. Not sure about K models.
Give me..a frame to build a bike on, and my imagination will build upon that frame

What models are you talking about? I think all frames but the Hondamatic models changed from 1976-1977. On K's the frame from the backbone back should be different (seat mounts, rear peg mounts, rear fender mounts, etc). On the F's the lower rear section of the frame changed to accomidate the new foot peg brackets and exhaust.

Mechanically speaking you should be able to change over almost everything (motor, suspension, etc) although some of the wiring may be a little short. Since you want to use a 76 frame, why not get the earlier bodywork (if it is a K bike) and run it that way. If it is an F you should be able to use your existing tank and seat.

I just got off the phone with a local shop and it turns out that WI titles the engine, not the frame for that year. YEA!!!!  I can work with that.  ;D  Should be a lot less work too.  ;)

Thanks for the feedback guys.  This forum continues to amaze me with it's members knowledge and ability to share that knowledge with out talking down to people.  Keep up the good work!

BTW, this is really a project that is my friends bike that I happen to be very involved with.  What should I be charging him for the engine?

Yeah I would check with your DMV first before doing anything else. NY titles 1971 Harleys and early brit bikes by their engine and then everything else by the frame, and I imagine you can have the same kind of situation in other states. If I just asked a harley only shop they would tell me that pre 71 bikes are titled by engine because they have no expirence with Jap bikes. I bet if you look at your title for the 76, you'll see it has a frame number because that is what honda used when issuing the original title.

BTW, What Models are we talking about here? You still haven't been clear on that and there is a difference.

I would double check the title thing Cleveland. I'm also in WI and sometimes the bikes were titled by the frame and sometimes by the engine. I have had both.

Oh to joy!  The vin is on the engine so it should be a clean swap.
