Kz1000 parts compatibility for cb750
« on: September 05, 2024, 08:16:35 AM »
I got a guy interested in my metal bender and he has kz1000 parts to trade. Specifically front and rear mags with disc brakes, front forks, all calipers and some other parts I can't see needing.

Mostly interested because of the mags and forks. I will take my caliper along with me and get the fork diameter. From what I can find on the internet the kz1000 forks are 38mm and 3 mm wider than the cb750.

Kz1000 triple trees can be had pretty cheap.

Anybody ever use kz1000 parts on a 750?

This would be a trade so nothing out of pocket. If it can work it would be sweet. The mags and the disc brake especially the dual up front is exactly what I want.

Cheers

Anybody ever use kz1000 parts on a 750?

I have a Kaw Z1 900 [predecessor to the KZ1000] and a couple CB750's, although many parts on the bikes look similar, I doubt any would be a direct fit.

I don't mind doing a bit of fab work. Fully expected to have to swap neck stems at minimum.

In your opinion is the kawasaki forks as good or better than the honda forks.

As for the rear I expect fab work there as well.

I would say they are as good or better than the Honda, yes.  And if not mistaken, the KZ came standard with dual front discs. [my '75 Z1 did not]

You probably need to swap the steering stem from your donor trees to a 750 stem to make the swap compatible. I’d suggest you use KZ calipers and rotors too for ease of integrating the swapped wheels.

Yes this has dual front disc as well as disc rear. Here is a picture of the wheels.

All the calipers and rotors come with the deal. I am just missing the triple trees. He is going to have a look for them all the same.

I had a KZ550 front end on my bike for a while. I would say the forks were better than the stock Honda forks, and the brakes were pretty good. One issue was that with the axle mounted in front of the fork, instead of centered, the offset of the triples moved the fork tubes back, closer to the gas tank. With my Seeley, I had to modify the steering stops to keep the forks from bashing the tank, which gave the bike the turning radius of a school bus. :( IIRC, the KZ steering stem used the same bearings as the Honda, so it didn't need to be modified.

Awesome point on the axle position. Will have to check that out. So sounds like it is very doable either way. Thanks

Parts look to be from a 1980-83 KZ1000LTD, 38mm leading axle forks, so you would need a triple clamp off the same.  A triple clamp off an earlier KZ1000 or other straight-leg bike would really increase trail and slow down the steering.  The same tapered steering bearings that fit the CB750 will also work on the KZ stems.

The rear wheel is a 16" but there are other models that have 18" rim, like the police models.  Rear axle is larger diameter too.  The Kawi parts are heavier and not much better. IMHO, looks like a lot of work to avoid adding a second disc to the CB750.

Thank you for the info. Clears a lot up.

I hear you on the work part but it is exactly the look I am after. I would gain dusl disc front as well as disc rear.

Now my thought on the rear axle being larger is swap the bearings in the wheel to the 750 size axle. Would have to source them but it would not be the first time chaseing bearings.  This is also not a floating rear caliper as far as I can tell which is good

I think it is doable and would accomplish both the looks I sm after and an upgraded break system.

For the sake of a bender I am not using I think it is worth a look.

Rather than swap bearings and make spacers, easier to enlarge the chain adjuster slots in the swing arm by filing the lower edge 2mm, and drill out the chain adjusters.

Nice! I love it when a community comes together with this type of knowledge. Now I will have to source spacers either way but this works perfectly. Thank you.

This deal is sounding sweeter with every post. Even think I got a triple tree lined up.

I think it will look sick with the 16 out back. Real muscle bike look.

basically, the only reason I have never done it is the weight of those wheels, ugggh.  I think Enkei must have cast out of lead, not aluminum, especially the rear.  Kawi brakes are wayyy better, meaning that they actually function as a device that will stop a motorcycle.  Another point to consider is if the Kawi calipers need rebuilt, there are a lot more rubber parts that will need replaced so it ends up costing quite a bit more money and time than the very simple Honda calipers
If it works good, it looks good...

Awesome info on the brakes. As of now if this comes to pass I will have nothing into it except a piece of equipment in trade. This can be a long term project and can sit for awhile while sorting the parts or it could be good to go. Either way I can sell the extra parts and make some money to put towards things like brake rebuilds. The seat coming with the deal will cover that.

Got a good haul after with the kz1000 parts. Forks are in good shape. Same thing with the wheels. The brake parts are all there. Will need to be cleaned up but I should be able to sell some of this stuff and put towards making this happen.
