When should I get a steering dampe (r?????????????
« on: June 14, 2005, 01:28:31 PM »
It think I might need one, I'm riding 75-80ish MPH everyday. When I hit some bumps and distorted road steps, I get wobbles. When I rode my friends Cb750 and none of this happens, I know the bike is heavier and absorbs more. I even upgraded my steering bearings, but I think I need a steering damper. Does this sound right?

Is you front rim true and in balance.  I had the same problem.  I replaced my front rim.  I assume your triple is good since you upgraded your steering bearings.

Good Luck.

How about fluid level in the fork tubes? Could it be different as a result of maint. or leaks?

I have a 1976 CB550 K, I also had the front rim and wheel balanced. I have "progressive springs"(they feel great!). I have  Clubman bars and rebuilt the fork seals with new oi 15w.

I'll read the answers when I get home, I'm off to the 10 FWY going West in the carpool lane doing 75-80ish.

Damn Nomad , How`d you mount that laptop to the tank? And which hand do you type with ::)

I mounted a damper to my 500 and I have no more wiggle whatsoever in the corners now, I highly recommend.

Sometimes something from the back affects the front; how're your swing arm bushings and rear tire pressure?
Dude- your 8 layers are showing!

Check also the condition of your wheel bearings, particularly the back ones.

I dont think you need a steering damper, its more likely a problem with the bike. Steering dampers are for use on bikes with a combination of exteme acceleration and agressive geometry (caster and fork offset). The Neither of which afflict us on this site  ;D - no offence. Check wheel / tyre balance, fork alignment etc. Ids it prone to a certain speed or under hard (ish) acceleration?

Are either of your tires of a ribbed design?  Or, have they treads not in line with the wheels rotation?
Might as well tell us what tires you are running and what tire pressures you are using.
What spring preload setting are you using for the rear?

Are your tires (horror) bald?  Has the rear tire lost it's shape through wear?  Is the center of the tire worn more than that portion near the sides?

Will the bike keep tracking straight without any hands on bars?  Try this on a flat road, or at the peak of a crown on a road.  Does it consistently pull to one side?  This can be a rear wheel alignment issue.  The chain adjusters or something more serious.

Are all your spokes tight?  Have your rims been checked for runout?

Steering dampers are fitted to cope with full tank slappers, i.e. lock to lock violent slaps, not to disguise wobbles or weaves. You need to work through the moving parts in the rolling chassis, front to back, and make sure everything is working correctly.  ::)
In the UK anything over 40 years old only needs insurance and Fuel.
